FACULTY

Liberal Arts faculty member Greta Berman gave a lecture on Synesthesia Among Contemporary Composers and Performing Artists at the Institute of Cognitive and Brain Sciences at U.C.-Berkeley in November. In February, she co-chaired a panel on Synesthesia and Perception at the College Art Association.

Evening Division and graduate studies faculty member David Dubal ('61, piano) hosted a chamber music concert at the Greenwich House Music School that featured works by Nicolai Karlovich Medtner. Performers included Conway Kuo (BM '94, MM '96, violin), current student Cyrus Beroukhim, Arman Alpyspaev (BM '95, viola), Edward Arron (BM '98, cello), and Jung Lin (BM '96, piano).

Guitar faculty member
Sharon Isbin gave a concert at the 92nd St. Y in February. The program included the New York premiere of John Duarte's Joan Baez Suite for solo guitar, written for Isbin, and chamber music for guitar by Rodrigo, Albinoni, Vivaldi, Falla, and Boccherini with Catherine Cho (BM '92, MM '94, violin), Soovin Kim, Carter Brey, and Cynthia Phelps.

Organ faculty member
Paul Jacobs gave lectures and recitals at the Midwinter Organ Conference held last month at Baylor University in Texas.

Pre-College faculty member
Frank Levy ('92, piano), Edward Arron (BM '98, cello), and Kurt Muroki (BM '94, MM '97, double bass) gave a concert of music by Schubert in January at the Tenri Cultural Institute in New York.

Lawrence Rhodes, director of the Dance Division, received a distinguished alumni award from the Joffrey Ballet School in February.

Pre-College faculty member
Adelaide Roberts gave a chamber music concert last month celebrating the opening of a new performing arts center at Georgian Court University in Lakewood, N.J. Michael Blum (BM '77, MM '78, piano) and Pre-College voice student Marissa Carro also performed.

STUDENTS

Doctoral candidate
Justine Fang Chen (BM '98, MM '00, violin and composition) had her work Inside-Out for drum set and piano performed by Danny Mallon and Steven Beck at the Cornelia Street Café in New York.

Piano student
Jonathan Coombs made his New York recital debut at the Flea Theater in February as a result of his prize in the New York Piano Competition in June 2002.

Organ student
Isabelle Demers performed the Poulenc Organ Concerto with Ensemble Amati in Montreal in January.

Doctoral candidate
Ofra Yitzhaki (MM '00, piano) was soloist with the Romanian Radio Orchestra in Bucharest, performing Mozart's last piano concerto, K. 595. On the same tour, she performed a recital at the Bucharest University, including Ives's First Piano Sonata and Debussy's Second Book of Etudes. Last fall, she performed a recital at the San Francisco Pacific Art League, featuring music by composers who are also active as visual artists. The recital took place in a gallery which also featured the composers' art works, and was supported by Stanford University.
