Vol. XXI No. 3
November 2005

Stretto, a broadsheet-style student newspaper published by Juilliard during the late 1940s and early '50s, featured photographs, drawings, and articles on school events as well as general musical topics. This month's Past Times features the front page of Stretto, Vol. 2, No. 8, published on January 20, 1948. It included articles on Carnegie Hall performances, tuition fees (which had been increased to a whopping $450 per year!), a symposium featuring music by Ned Rorem (B.S. '46; M.S. '48, both in composition) and other student composers, and a song contest sponsored by the Athletic Committee. (For a glimpse at Stretto humor, see the drawing titled "Cafeteriana.")
