New Performance Season Begins: Over 650 Offerings Scheduled for 2001-02

The Juilliard School’s 2001-02 season gets underway this month, with the first of more than 650 music, dance, and drama performances. Most of these events are free and open to the public, providing Juilliard students with an opportunity to hone their skills as communicative artists before a public audience.

Launching the season on September 22 is a concert in the Juilliard Theater by the New Juilliard Ensemble, conducted by its director, Joel Sachs. The NJE will offer three more concerts during the season, including the opening program of the 2002 Focus! Festival on January 25 in the Juilliard Theater, as well as concerts in Alice Tully Hall on November 20 and April 16.

The American Brass Quintet, which is now in its 41st season, opens the Daniel Saidenberg Faculty Recital Series on October 15 in the Juilliard Theater. The program will feature Elizabethan consort music and 16th-century canons, as well as the New York premiere of Samuel Adler's Be Not Afraid: The Isle Is Full of Noises. Erik Ewazen's Frost Fire will complete the offerings. The faculty recital series will continue with the Juilliard String Quartet on February 7 and March 21 (which are both in Alice Tully Hall); the New York Woodwind Quintet on March 26 (in Paul Hall); and violinist Glenn Dicterow (with pianist Gerald Robbins and violist Karen Dreyfus) on May 1.

This month’s offerings also include the first two workshop presentations by the Drama Division, featuring its fourth-year students. Laurence Fishburne’s Riff Raff (directed by Regge Life) will be presented in Studio 301 from September 25 through October 1. John Guare’s Landscape of the Body (directed by Will Pomerantz) will run simultaneously in the Drama Theater September 26 through 30. Other productions this year will include Harold Pinter’s The Hothouse (directed by Richard Feldman) November 15-19, Paul Rudnick’s Valhalla (directed by Christopher Ashley) December 12-16, and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night (directed by Daniel Fish) February 6-10. All are being presented in the Drama Theater, and will return later in the year for additional performances during the Drama Division’s spring repertory season.

Opera and Vocal Arts Offerings

A Juilliard Songbook concert of music by Hugo Wolf launches the Jennie Tourel Vocal Arts series on October 4 at 6 p.m. in Morse Hall. Premiered in 1955 and performed by the New York City Opera a year later, Susannah transfers the Bible story to rural Tennessee.

Miguel Harth-Bedoya will conduct the world premiere of Stephen Paulus’s Heloise and Abelard on April 24, with additional performances on April 26 and 28. The opera, with a libretto by Frank Corsaro, was commissioned by Juilliard and made possible by a generaous grant from the late Francis Goelet, and as part of the national series of works from Meet the Composer/Arts Endowment Commissioning Music/USA, with the support of the Helen F. Whitaker Fund. project. It is based on letters that relate a love story between a 12th-century scholar and his pupil.

Alumna soprano Jennifer Aylmer has been awarded the 2001 Alice Tully Vocal Arts Debut Recital, which will take place in Tully Hall on November 28. She will be joined by pianist Kenneth Merrill. This annual concert advancing an outstanding young vocalist is underwritten by the Alice Tully Young Artists Fund (which also provides scholarships in voice and organ). Aylmer will sing music by Weill, Poulenc, Shostakovich, Almeida, Villa-Lobos, Guarnieri, and Bolcom.

The annual Vocal Arts Honors Recital will be offered on April 2 in Alice Tully Hall, featuring selected young artists of the Juilliard Opera Center and the Vocal Arts Department.

Focus! Festival 2002

Focus! 2002: “Twelve Tones and Beyond” surveys the post-World War II legacy of Schoenberg’s 12-tone method, exploring the broad implications of an approach that has been at the center of musical thought since the 1920s. The composers to be featured—spanning three generations and a variety of styles—include some who, while not embracing the method, have still been strongly influenced by its principles. The opening concert is in the Juilliard Theater on January 25; five additional concerts take place between January 28 and February 1.
