The Juilliard School Announces the Names of
Two Recipients of the 2002-2003
Henrietta and Albert J. Ziegle, Jr. Scholarships

Violinist Amy Schroeder from Amherst, New York and
Violist Sarah Lane from Buffalo will attend
The Juilliard School in New York City in September, 2002

Two Buffalo-area musicians are recipients of the 2002-2003 Henrietta and Albert J. Ziegle, Jr. Scholarships to The Juilliard School. They are violinist Amy Schroeder, a graduate of Amherst High School who was born in Buffalo, and violist Sarah Lane, also born in Buffalo and a graduate of Williamsville High School East. Ms. Schroeder begins her studies in the undergraduate program at The Juilliard School in New York City in September 2002; Ms. Lane, who received the bachelor of music degree from Juilliard in May 2002, continues her studies at Juilliard in the graduate program this fall, working toward a master of music degree. Other Ziegle Scholarship recipients returning to Juilliard to continue their studies this fall are violinist Christina Courtin, bass trombonist Benjamin Green, and drummer Carmen Intorre, Jr.

A graduate of Amherst High School, violinist Amy Schroeder, 17, will begin her undergraduate studies with Sally Thomas at Juilliard this fall. As a soloist, she has performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic, Amherst Symphony, and Greater Buffalo Youth orchestras. Ms. Schroeder also has won numerous competitions in the past few years, including The MTNA (Music Teachers National Association) New York State High School Competition for solo strings, the Geneseo State University High School Solo Strings Competition, the Ithaca College High School Solo Strings Competition, and the Erie County Music Educator’s Scholarship Competition.

A native of Buffalo, violist Sarah Lane, 21, will be continuing her studies with Toby Appel at Juilliard in the graduate program this fall. During her past four years at Juilliard, she has taken part in chamber music coachings given by masters in the field, such as Frank Proto, Homer Mensch, Curtis Macomber, Arie Lipsky, and Ann Setzer. Ms. Lane also has appeared in orchestral performances at Juilliard led by guest conductors, including Otto-Werner Mueller of The Juilliard School, James DePreist of the Oregon Symphony, George Manahan of New York City Opera, Kurt Masur formerly of the New York Philharmonic, and a performance of Mahler’s Second Symphony with the Juilliard Orchestra and Juilliard Choral Union at Carnegie Hall led by Jahja Ling of the Cleveland Symphony.. In July of 2001, she participated in the International Music Festival at Leipzig, Germany, where she was able to continue her studies with Toby Appel and receive chamber music coachings with Gerhard Erber of the Hochschule for Music and Theater of Leipzig.

Money bequeathed to Juilliard by the late Norma Krull (heir to Albert J. Ziegle, founder of Ziegle Brewery) established the Ziegle Scholarship Fund at Juilliard in 1970. Scholarship money was designated specifically for Juilliard voice or piano students from Buffalo who needed financial assistance. However, typically only one in ten applicants who auditions at Juilliard is accepted for enrollment each year. In recent years, eligibility has expanded so that Ziegle funds now are available for young artists in all of the disciplines taught at Juilliard, from an expanded area of western New York State. In the event that the number of qualified candidates exceeds the available resources of the Ziegle Scholarship Fund in a given year, priority is given to eligible Juilliard students of piano or voice residing in the city of Buffalo, and thereafter to students of piano and voice residing in Erie County, as was stipulated in the original bequest.

In order to qualify for a Ziegle Scholarship, a student must satisfy all of the following criteria:

  • the student must be admitted to Juilliard as a full-time student following the usual admissions procedures;
  • the student must have a permanent residence in one of the eight specified counties of western New York State;
  • the students must demonstrate financial need in accordance with procedures established by the Juilliard Financial Aid Committee.

Juilliard seeks students whose talent and commitment to excellence promise future achievement in their chosen areas of major study. The admissions committee selects students on the basis of their performance at competitive auditions held at Juilliard. All auditions are evaluated by members of the faculty. Juilliard does not set minimum or maximum age limits, however preference is given to students in the formative stages of their artistry who will benefit most from the type of training available at Juilliard. Admissions decisions are not related to financial aid applications or decisions.

The Ziegle Scholarship is available to instrumentalists, vocalists, dancers, and actors who are accepted to Juilliard from Erie, Niagara, Genesee, Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Alleghany, and Orleans counties in western New York State. Interested students should ask their schools’ guidance counselors for additional information regarding these events.

Young Artists wishing to apply to Juilliard should contact the Office of Admissions, The Juilliard School, 60 Lincoln Center Plaza, New York, NY 10023-6590. The telephone number is (212) 799-5000, ext. 223. An audition will be scheduled after an application has been received and reviewed. Those scheduled for auditions will receive notification approximately one month prior to the auditions date. Admissions decisions are confirmed only when all credentials and required documents are on file with the admissions office. Additional information may be found on the School’s Web site at www.juilliard.edu/admissions.
