Juilliards concerto competition winner Brian (Keng-Lun) Hsu performs Liszts Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-Flat Major with the Juilliard Orchestra led by guest conductor James DePreist on Thursday, November 7 at 8 PM in Alice Tully Hall. The Orchestra also performs Brittens Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes and Shostakovichs Symphony No. 11 in G Minor, Op. 103, "The Year 1905". Mr. DePreist has appeared as a guest conductor for Juilliard ensembles on six occasions since 1991; he also is the subject of an upcoming documentary for WHYY in Philadelphia (PBS).

20-year-old Juilliard pianist Brian (Keng-Lun) Hsu began playing piano and violin at age five. He has won top prizes in numerous competitions both in the U.S. and Taiwan, including the Corpus Christi International Young Artists Competition, the Isabel Scionti International Piano Solo Competition, the 1997-98 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition at Juilliard, the Piano Honors Recital Competition at Juilliard, and the 1991 National Kawai Piano Competition in Taiwan. Mr. Hsu made his orchestral debut at the age of twelve performing Saint-Saëns Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso with the Young Artists Orchestra in Taiwan. In 1999 he performed Liszts Totentanz with The Philadelphia Orchestra, as part of its centennial season, after winning The Philadelphia Orchestra Albert M. Greenfield Student Competition. Mr. Hsu has also performed with the National Symphony Orchestra in Taiwan under Vladimir Verbitsky, the Juilliard Pre-College Orchestra, and The Haddonfield Symphony. Upcoming appearances of this season include solo recitals in Palm Beach, Florida and Taiwan, as well as a concerto performance with the Tai-Chung Classical Orchestra.
A native of Taiwan, Mr. Hsu first came to the U.S. in 1996. He is currently a third-year undergraduate student at Juilliard, studying with Yoheved Kaplinsky. Mr. Hsu is the recipient of Richard R. Levien Memorial Scholarship in Piano, Bertha Levin Scholarship, and Vladimir Horowitz Scholarship.
