Juilliards concerto competition winner Chenxin Xu performs Beethovens Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 37, with the Juilliard Orchestra led by guest conductor Sir Roger Norrington on Friday, December 6 at 8 PM in Carnegie Hall. The program also includes Mozarts Overture and Ballet Music from Idomeneo and Brahms Symphony No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 68. Sir Roger returns to Juilliard at the Schools invitation, after his orchestral reading with the Juilliard Orchestra in February of 2002. Juilliard students who took part in the February reading benefited from Sir Rogers extensive knowledge of period performance practice and style, which was immediately applied to that afternoons reading of Haydns Symphony No. 100 ("Drumroll").

21 year-old pianist Chenxin Xu currently is a third year undergraduate student at Juilliard under the tutelage of Yoheved Kaplinsky and Robert McDonald. A native of Beijing, China, Ms. Xu began her piano studies at the age of three with Yuan Wu at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. In 1996 she entered Juilliards Pre-College Division as a pupil of Herbert Stessin. Ms. Xu has won numerous prizes in piano competitions, including the Young Artist Competition in Texas; the piano concerto competition at Juilliards Pre-College Division; and the 2000 Nakamishi Piano Competition at Aspen, where she performed Ravels Piano Concerto in G Major under conductor Markand Thankar. She has attended the Aspen Music Festival and School as the recipient of the New Horizon Fellowship, and the Taos School of Music in New Mexico. Ms. Xu has made solo appearances worldwide, including an Asian tour in 1999 giving recitals in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, and Beijing; and major venues in U.S. including Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. Ms. Xu is the recipient of Joseph Fidelman Scholarship and Morton B. Knafel Memorial Scholarship.
