Juilliard’s String Department is the largest department within the Music Division, representing about one-third of its total student enrollment. Students come from all over the world to study with members of a faculty that includes internationally acclaimed soloists, world-renowned chamber and orchestral musicians, and leading pedagogues. The Juilliard String Quartet, recognized as one of the world’s leading chamber ensembles, has been in residence at Juilliard since the time of its founding in 1946.

Juilliard houses a collection of more than 200 historic stringed instruments, including several outstanding examples by Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppi Guarneri del Gesù. Students may apply to borrow them for special performances or competitions through the Instrumental Loan Program.
