Juilliard String Quartet Seminar 2012
Each year The Juilliard School hosts a weeklong seminar to foster the artistic growth of pre-professional string quartets. Through intensive coaching and mentoring with members of the Juilliard String Quartet, as well as the interaction with participating quartets, students are able to refine their artistry in a stimulating artistic environment.
Application Procedure:
- You may download an application for the 2012 J.S.Q. Seminar (PDF format).
- A standard music CD (preferred) or cassette tape that includes three movements, one each from a work from the Classical, Romantic, and contemporary periods, must be submitted to the Juilliard Admissions Office with the completed application and fee ($50.00 U.S., check or money order payable to "The Juilliard School"). The deadline for applying is February 1, 2012 (see contact information below).
- Applications will be reviewed by the Juilliard String Quartet; selected quartets will be invited to participate.
Details of the Seminar:
- The seminar begins Monday, May 21, 2012, at 9:30 a.m.; quartets must arrive in New York the day before. It ends on Friday, May 25, around 10 p.m. Participating quartets may not have any other obligations during this time.
- Each quartet will receive two daily coachings with members of the Juilliard String Quartet, have a rehearsal studio, and perform in a public concert at Juilliard.
- Two works of contrasting styles will be studied. It is expected that the quartet will have performed these works in a public concert prior to arrival at Juilliard.
- Tuition is $340 for each participating quartet, and $80 for each auditor.
- Participants and auditors will be responsible for their own lodgings, meals, and incidental expenses.
