The 2011 Starling-DeLay Symposium on Violin Studies explores the theme "Teaching Excellence" in a 5-day event dedicated to fostering the legacy of the late renowned teacher, Dorothy DeLay. Held at The Juilliard School, the 2011 Symposium features world-renowned artist-faculty teaching pedagogy and master classes, and performing in recitals.

2011 Artist-Faculty
Master classes: Itzhak Perlman, Glenn Dicterow, Ida Kavafian, Joseph Lin, and David Updegraff
Pedagogy classes and topics:
Brian Lewis: Teaching Individuality in the Music of Fritz Kreisler
Teri Einfeldt:Preparing Students for Successful Concerti Study
Ray Iwazumi: Ysaÿe Solo Sonatas Nos. 2 and 5: An Aesthetic Outlook and Technical Means of Expression
Julie Lyonn Lieberman: Joint and Muscle Physiology: A Walking Tour; An Ergonomic Approach to Practice and Performance; and 21st-Century String Pedagogy
Recitalists: Ryu Goto and the Juilliard String Quartet

Participation is offered at one of two levels: Participant or Student Artist

Participants accepted to the Symposium observe all master classes, attend recitals and participate in workshops designed to help teachers refine their pedagogical skills. Participants should bring their instruments for use in pedagogy sessions.  Preference is given to participants who are professional violinists, teachers, post-graduate and college students. High school-age (and younger) participants may be admitted to all sessions on a space-available basis, but only as observers in technique and pedagogy sessions.

Student Artists are selected as performing students for the Symposium. Up to 10 violinists are accepted as Student Artists to perform in public master classes for Glenn Dicterow, Ida Kavafian, Joseph Lin, and David Updegraff. In addition to performing twice in master classes for two different teachers, Student Artists are featured in public performance on selected evening recitals in Paul Hall. Student Artists may also observe other activities throughout the Symposium as time allows. There is no tuition fee for Student Artists.

To audition for the Student Artists program, applicants must submit:

1) A letter of nomination by a Starling-DeLay Symposium, Juilliard college or Pre-College faculty member;
2) Two letters of recommendation; one must be from the applicant's current primary teacher;
3) A recent, unedited CD or DVD with the following repertore:

  • one movement from an unaccompanied sonata or partita by Bach
  • a movement from any concerto in the standard repertoire
  • one Paganini caprice
  • one virtuosic show piece (by Sarasate, Wieniawski, Kreisler, etc.).

Submitted CDs and DVDs should be marked clearly with the performer's name and repertoire. Preference is given to students currently enrolled in a pre-college, Bachelor's or Master's degree program.
