August 15, 2022 | COVID Protocols for the Start of the Fall 2022 Semester

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

First, we want to welcome all the incoming new students to the Juilliard community – we are so thrilled to have you joining us in the fall, and we look forward to meeting each of you very soon.

This email is to update everyone on Juilliard’s COVID protocols for the upcoming school year. At each stage of this ever-changing pandemic, our focus has been on delivering the highest level of artistic and educational experience to our students as safely as possible. We continue to seek input and guidance from our medical consultants, track CDC and local health department recommendations closely, and remain flexible in our response to conditions as they evolve.

We also continue to focus on protocols that help limit disruptions to the Juilliard performance and academic experience – the fact remains that fewer cases in the community means a better performance and educational experience for all.

As we look ahead to next year, we will continue this principled and flexible approach. Our hope is to be able to ease restrictions as conditions on the ground merit, and as advice from our medical consultants and the CDC evolve, with the understanding that our protocols will likely shift throughout the year.

Please read the guidance below carefully and reach out to my office ([email protected]) should you have any questions.

I look forward to seeing you around Juilliard in the coming weeks.

Sincerely,
Adam Meyer
Provost

Testing and Masking Protocols for the Start of the Semester

Testing

  • If you should test positive for COVID at any time, you are required to report the positive result via our reporting form. Juilliard’s COVID Response Team will continue contact tracing on all reported positive cases. If you tested positive for COVID-19 over the summer, please complete this form now.
  • At the recommendation of our medical advisors, Juilliard will be implementing mandatory testing for all students (new and returning) in the first two weeks of the semester. Please see below for more on our testing plan for the start of the fall semester:
    • All students are asked to test 72 hours prior to their departure for Juilliard. While PCR tests are recommended, rapid tests are acceptable. A positive test result should be reported to the school immediately using this form.
    • Students arriving at the residence hallbeginning Friday, August 19will be required to complete a rapid COVID antigen test and a self-administered PCR test. Both tests will need to be completed upon arrival, and positive test results should be reported immediately. Complete move-in testing information will be sent by Residence Life; please read that carefully.
    • All studentswill be required to test the weeks of August 29 and September 5. Complete information on the testing procedure and schedule will be shared in the coming week.

Masking

  • Currently, cases remain high in New York City, and the CDC and New York City Health Departments continue to recommend masking when indoors. Therefore, as we begin the fall semester, we will maintain our masking requirements from the Spring 2022 semester. This includes masking in all shared public spaces and, for students, unmasking only for specified performance activities. More specific guidance on mask-wearing can be found on the Juilliard website.
  • Public audiences and guests will be required to mask inside the Diamond Building at all times, including during performances.
  • We strongly recommend the use of well-fitting, high-quality KN95 masks, which are available at no charge to anyone in the community at the Public Safety desk.

Vaccination Requirement

  • Juilliard will continue to require students, faculty, staff, and guests to receive the primary series of COVID vaccines. While no longer required, booster doses are still strongly encouraged. For further questions and information about the vaccination requirement, including the waiver approval process, please contact [email protected](students) or [email protected](faculty/staff).
  • Until further notice, public audiences and guests will continue to be required to show proof of vaccination upon entering the Diamond Building.

Guest Policy

  • At this time, the guest policy in the residence hall will remain consistent with the policy in place during the Spring 2022 semester. We recognize that this policy poses inconveniences to our residential students, and our hope is to be able to return to less restrictive measures as soon as health conditions allow.
  • Similarly, students will need to request permission from the Office of the Provost if they need to sign a guest into the main Diamond building. As health conditions improve, we hope to restore pre-pandemic policies that would allow students to sign in guests.

Stay Home If You Feel Sick

  • If you are experiencing symptoms, stay home and consult your medical provider (or Health Services for students) for further guidance on testing and isolation.
