Linda Kent was born in Buffalo, N.Y. She was a principal dancer with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater from 1968-74. She was a principal dancer with Paul Taylor Dance Company from 1975-89. Her choreography has been shown at City Center Theater, St. John the Divine, Castillo Cultural Center, Riverside Church, and Union Theological Seminary, where she is artist in residence. Her television work includes Ailey’s Memories and Visions, Cosby Salutes Ailey, and five Paul Taylor Dance in America programs for PBS. Kent restaged Paul Taylor’s works for the Bat-Dor Company, Les Grandes Ballets Canadiens, the Joffrey Ballet, SUNY-Purchase, Emerson College, Juilliard Dance Ensemble, London Contemporary Dance Theater, La Scala Opera Ballet, Ballet du Nord, Oregon Ballet Theater, and Ballet Arizona. She is a former faculty member at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Minnesota Dance Theater, and N.Y.S. Summer School of the Dance. She has been a faculty member at Paul Taylor Dance Company School since its inception in 1983 and at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center since 1995. Kent has been head of the dance department at Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School since 2000. She received her bachelor’s degree from Juilliard and has been a faculty member at Juilliard since 1984.
