OLIVEROS Deep Listening (1971-90)

OLIVEROS Angels and Demons (1980)

Deep listening is a term coined by American composer and artist Pauline Oliveros to distinguish between involuntary hearing and conscious listening. The works on this program invite us all, performers and audience alike, to become more aware of the soundscape: our sonic environment, from the physical world around us to the vibrant world inside each of us.

In Oliveros’ words: “For me Deep Listening is a lifelong practice. The more I listen the more I learn to listen. Deep Listening involves going below the surface of what is heard, expanding to the whole field of sound while finding focus. This is the way to connect with the acoustic environment, all that inhabits it, and all that there is.”

In the middle portion of our program, we invite everyone in the room to participate in deep listening prompts that will be distributed so that we can all make art together. We hope that the awareness that these works set in motion lets us all take a moment to cherish, wonder at, and more deeply understand our world, so that we may better take care of it and ourselves.

About Juilliard Community Engagement
Juilliard’s Office of Community Engagement brings community members to our campus for events to overcome geographic and cost barriers to arts access. We empower Juilliard students through cocurricular programming and advising to be the change they want to see in the world and use their artistry to connect with other people, build sustainable programs, forge lasting relationships, and foster dialogues. Community Engagement Fellows grow as citizens, deepen their sense of artistic purpose, and develop skills for life beyond the classroom or studio via participation in our five fellowship programs.

This event is part of Juilliard Celebrates Earth Month, a series of performances and activities that honor our collective home.
