Anthony Lioi

Anthony Lioi is an associate professor of Liberal Arts and English at Juilliard. He was born in Long Branch, N.J., and earned a BA in English and American literature from Brown University and an MA and PhD in literatures in English from Rutgers University.

Before coming to Juilliard, Lioi taught at Rutgers and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At Juilliard, he teaches courses in the Liberal Arts Core and academic writing, as well as advanced electives on literary ecology, new media, medievalism, religion and science, and postmodernism. His scholarship centers on the fields of contemporary American literature, ecocriticism, cultural studies, and rhetoric and composition. He has published scholarly articles in journals such as Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment, ImageTexT: Interdisciplinary Comics Studies, Feminist Studies, Callaloo, Green Theory & Praxis, Journal of Advanced Composition, ACOMA: A Journal of American Studies, Ecozone@, Journal of Ecocriticism, Multi-Ethnic Literature of the U.S., TransFormations: A Journal of Inclusive Scholarship and Pedagogy, and CrossCurrents. He contributed to germinal volumes in ecocriticism, including Coming Into Contact, Artifacts & Illuminations, Early Modern Ecostudies, Ecomedia, and Teaching Ecocriticism and Green Cultural Studies. With Nicole Merola of the Rhode Island School of Design, he contributed an essay to the collection Race and Writing Assessment, which won the 2014 Conference on College Composition and Communication Outstanding Book Award. He sits on the editorial board of Green Letters and serves as media review editor for Resilience: A Journal of Environmental Humanities.

Lioi is also a published poet, with recent work appearing in Assaracus: A Journal of Gay Poetry and Green Humanities. In 2016, he published a monograph called Nerd Ecology: Defending the World With Unpopular Culture in the Environmental Cultures series of Bloomsbury Academic. With Christoph Irmscher of Indiana University, he serves as co-president for the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment, a scholarly organization in the environmental humanities. He is at work on a new book project called Metahumanism.
