Liberal Arts faculty member Gonzalo J. Sánchez, born in New York City, is the recipient of Chateaubriand, American Philosophical Society, and Council on Western Europe fellowships. His publications include Organizing Independence: The Artists’ Federation of the Paris Commune and Its Legacy, 1871-1889; Pity in Fin-de-Siècle French Culture: Liberté, Egalité, Pitié; and articles on the arts and cultural history. He was a faculty member at Columbia University from 1993-96, at York College from 1996-97, and at Boston University from 1998-2001. In 2000, he was a visiting professor at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. Sánchez received his doctoral degree in European history from Columbia University. He has been a Juilliard faculty member since 2001.
