Greta Berman was born in New York City and was a Chester Dale Fellow at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1979-80. She is the author of The Lost Years: Mural Painting in New York City Under the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Art Project, 1935-1943 (Garland Press, New York, 1978) and has co-organized exhibitions of American Realist art in Berlin, 1980-81.

Berman has curated exhibitions of American art at Lehman College of the City University of New York and Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University. She is a specialist in 19th- and 20th-century American and European paintings and in the interrelationship between music and the visual arts. She taught art history at the State University of New York—Stony Brook from 1970 to 1979. She holds a BA from Antioch College, a MA from the University of Stockholm, and a PhD from Columbia University. She joined the faculty at Juilliard in 1979.
