Vocal Arts


J.J. Penna has been a faculty member since 2006. He has accompanied such eminent singers as Kathleen Battle, Harolyn Blackwell, Amy Burton, David Daniels, Denyce Graves, and Florence Quivar, among others, in recitals at the Kennedy Center, Weill and Merkin recital halls in N.Y.C., the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, the Herbst Theater in San Francisco, Seiji Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood, Wigmore Hall in London, and on concert tours throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia, South America, and the former Soviet Union. Penna has premiered song cycles by William Bolcom, Ricky Ian Gordon, Richard Hundley, and Lowell Liebermann. He has performed and held fellowships at Tanglewood Music Center, the Chatauqua Institution, Banff Centre for the Arts, the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, and San Francisco Opera Center’s Merola Program, where he received the Otto Guth Award. Penna has taught master classes at the University of Michigan, Oberlin Conservatory, the University of Vancouver, and the University of Richmond. He has directed the vocal program at the Bowdoin Festival and has been on the staff of the Steans Institute of the Ravinia Festival. He is a faculty member at Yale School of Music and Westminster Choir College.
