Marianne Barrett was born in Germany, and after emigrating to the U.S, lived in Albuquerque and Santa Fe where she taught at the University of New Mexico, sang in recitals and oratorios, and performed many mezzo-soprano roles with the Albuquerque Opera Theater. Since coming to New York she has taught German at Columbia University and Hunter College, and became a member of the Juilliard faculty in 2006 and the school’s Pre-College faculty in 2008. She has also been on the faculty at the Manhattan School of Music since 1990 as German diction instructor/coach and language instructor and holds the same position at Mannes College, the New School for Music. She is also a language coach at the Metropolitan Opera. She spends her summers coaching singers at the Santa Fe Opera in their German opera productions and working with the young artists in the apprentice program. Barrett studied voice at Munich’s Staatliche Hochschule für Musik and German and English literature at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich.
