Phoebe Carrai is from Boston and performs (on an Italian cello attributed to Carlos Tononi, c.1690) with the Arcadian Academy and the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra, Göttingen Festspiel Orchestra, and various chamber ensembles. In 1983 she joined Musica Antiqua Köln and worked with them for 10 years. She has recorded three solo recordings including the Suites for solo Cello by J. S. Bach on the Avie label and many other works for Aetma, Deutsche Grammophon, Harmonia Mundi, Telarc, Decca, and BMG labels. Carrai was a former faculty member of Hilversum Conservatory in the Netherlands and at the University of the Arts in Berlin. She is currently on the faculty at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA, where she was a founding member and co-director of the International Baroque Institute and is also director of Harvard University’s Harvard Baroque Chamber Orchestra. She received her BM and MM degrees from New England Conservatory of Music and had postgraduate studies in historical performance practice with Nikolaus Harnoncourt at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. She became a member of the Juilliard faculty in 2009.
