Pianist Margo Garrett was born in Raleigh, N.C., and has collaborated with Jaime Laredo, Daniel Phillips, Paul Neubauer, David Shifrin, Sharon Robinson, Kathleen Battle, Barbara Bonney, Beverly Hoch, Lucy Shelton, Dawn Upshaw, Benita Valente, and the late Judith Raskin. She has performed the premieres of more than 30 works and has recorded on the RCA, Nonesuch, MusicMasters, Sony Classical, Deutsche Grammophon (1992 Grammy), and Dorian labels. Garrett was formerly co-director, with Samuel Sanders, of the Cape and Islands Chamber Music Festival, director of the Tanglewood Music Centers Vocal Program, and on the faculty of the New England Conservatory. Currently she is chair of accompanying and coaching at the University of Minnesota and chair of vocal faculty at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Steans Institute for Young Artists at Ravinia. She holds a BM from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and did graduate studies at the Manhattan School of Music. She studied piano with Irwin Freundlich, Samuel Sanders, and Pierre Bernac. Garrett joined The Juilliard School faculty in 1985, was chair of the accompanying program from 1986 to 1991, and rejoined the faculty in 2000.
