German-American director David Paul has worked in opera, theater, and film throughout the U.S. and abroad. Career highlights include the recent release of his film Dichterliebe: Poetlove, winner of several prizes and awards, as well as productions with L.A. Opera, Washington National Opera, the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Program, North Carolina Opera, Washington’s Shakespeare Theatre Company, Alaska’s Perseverance Theatre, and Wolf Trap Opera.
Equally devoted to training emerging singers and actors, Paul has directed multiple theater and opera productions at leading conservatories and colleges including Juilliard, Columbia University, Westminster Choir College, and Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, among others. He has given master classes in Israel, Japan, and China, and is a faculty member at Juilliard and the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Program.
Paul graduated summa cum laude from Columbia University, where he studied acting and directing. Originally from Hamburg, Germany, he lives in Brooklyn with his wife, pianist Renate Rohlfing.
