Graduate Studies faculty member Carl Schachter is co-author with Felix Salzer of Counterpoint in Composition and with Edward Aldwell of Harmony and Voice Leading. He has written numerous articles on theory and analysis and has given lectures and taught classes throughout North America and Europe. He has had visiting professorships at Hunter College, SUNY-Binghamton, Harvard University, and the École Normale Supérieure de Jeunes Filles (Paris). He has been a techniques of music faculty member at Mannes since 1956. At Mannes, he was dean from 1962-66. He was professor of music at Queens College and CUNY Graduate School from 1972-93 and a distinguished professor there from 1993-96. Schachter received his bachelor’s and doctorate (honoris causa) from Mannes College the New School for Music and a master’s in musicology from N.Y.U. He studied piano with Sara Levee, Isabelle Venegerova, and Israel Citkowitz. He studied conducting with Carl Bamberger and theory with Felix Salzer. He has been a faculty member since 1998.
