Chamber Music


French horn player David Wakefield was born in Durant, Okla. He has worked in New York as a freelancer, performing with the Orpheus Chamber Ensemble, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the Metropolitan Opera, and on Broadway. Wakefield has performed with the New York Philharmonic and the St. Louis, Houston, and Boston symphonies, the Aspen Festival Orchestra and Chamber Symphony, the Little Orchestra Society, and P.D.Q. Bach’s N.Y. concerts. Wakefield has played for commercial radio and TV recordings, numerous chamber music recordings, and played premieres of new works with Parnassus, Group for Contemporary Music, New Music Ensemble, and Speculum Musicae. He has made 38 recordings and numerous premieres of new works with the American Brass Quintet, of which he has been a member since 1976. Wakefield wrote A Comprehensive Survey of Orchestral Excerpt Books for Horn. Awards he has received include Concert Artists Guild and Chamber Music America’s Richard J. Bogomolny Award for extraordinary service to the field of Chamber Music. He has taught master classes at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, Rome (1991-93). Wakefield has been a faculty member at Aspen Music School since 1976 and at the Hartt School since 2011. He received his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from Juilliard. He has studied with Paul Mansur, Philip Farkas, Douglas Hill, Caesar LaMonaca, and James Chambers.
