Go Outside Your Comfort Zone!

The Israeli Chamber Project, an alumni-founded ensemble, celebrates its 10th anniversary with a weeklong Juilliard residency that includes presentations to students through the Marks Center for Career Services and Entrepreneurship and culminates in Homecoming, a concert of works by Strauss, Stravinsky, and Bartók on January 18 in Paul Hall. The performers will include ICP co-founders Evening Division faculty member Assaff Weisman (BM ’99, MM ’01, piano), Tibi Cziger (Graduate Diploma ’06, Artist Diploma ’08, clarinet), Michal Korman (MM ’07, Artist Diploma ’09, cello), and Itamar Zorman (MM ’09, Artist Diploma ’12, violin) as well as some students and faculty members Paul Neubauer (viola) and Eric Reed (horn).

The self-managed ensemble, its original core membership intact—Sivan Magen (BM ’07, MM ’08, harp) is also a co-founder—and expanded upon, continues to perform across North America, Asia, and Israel, and makes its European debut at London’s Wigmore Hall next season. Weisman cited Juilliard’s “climate of artistic collaboration, community, and open exploration” as key factors in enabling ICPs members to “take charge of their own destiny, create and manage an ensemble that honors their common cultural heritage, and allow them to advocate for music and music education well beyond their homeland.”

In advance of the festivities, Weisman had some advice for today’s students

  • Give some thought to how you define success, and stay open to that definition being different than when you first started on your path.
  • Say yes to projects, performances, roles, and experiences that might not seem to be within your comfort zone. This is a time for exploration, which can often lead to unexpectedly rich artistic possibilities.
  • It’s not unlikely that the person sitting across from you in the cafeteria will play a significant role in your artistic career. Nurture your relationships both in and out of school, as great art is often the work of a community.
