Juilliard Announces 2018-19 Season of Recitals and Chamber Music Concerts Featuring Its Resident Ensembles, Faculty, and Students

Highlights Include Daniel Saidenberg Faculty Recital Series With Annual Appearances by the Juilliard String Quartet on November 19 and March 25 and the American Brass Quintet on September 24

NEW YORK –– Juilliard announces its roster of recitals and chamber music concerts for the 2018-19 season. The Daniel Saidenberg Faculty Recital Series features annual appearances by the Juilliard String Quartet (Monday, November 19 and Monday, March 25, at 7:30pm, in Alice Tully Hall) and the American Brass Quintet (Monday, September 24, at 7:30pm, in Paul Hall), as well as recitals by violinist Laurie Smukler and pianist Robert McDonald (Tuesday, February 5, at 7:30pm, in Paul Hall), violist Samuel Rhodes and friends (Tuesday, March 19, at 7:30PM, in Paul Hall), violinist Joseph Lin and fortepianist Robert Levin (Thursday, April 25, at 7:30pm, in Paul Hall), and a chamber music concert with faculty members, violinist Catherine Cho, violist Hsin-Yun Huang, cellist Natasha Brofsky, and pianist Robert McDonald (Thursday, February 14, at 7:30pm, in Paul Hall).  

Pianists Huan Li and Zhu Wang are the winners of Juilliard’s 2018 Gina Bachauer Piano Competition and will give a duo recital on Tuesday, September 26, at 7:30pm, in Paul Hall.

Pianist Tomer Gewirtzman will give the seventh annual Leo B. Ruiz Memorial Recital on Friday, November 30, at 7:30pm in Carnegie Hall’s Weil Recital Hall.

Juilliard’s graduate resident string quartet, the Argus Quartet, will perform on the annual Lisa Arnhold Memorial Recital on Friday, May 6, at 7:30pm, in Alice Tully Hall.

Additional Chamber Music Events

Juilliard presents the annual ChamberFest from January 7 through 13. Each season, ChamberFest showcases Juilliard musicians who return early from winter break to rehearse chamber works of their choosing in intensive rehearsal sessions with Juilliard faculty coaches; the performances are open to the public. Tickets to all ChamberFest performances at $10.

Sonatenabend concerts showcase Juilliard collaborative piano students and student instrumentalists. Performances take place in Paul Hall on Wednesdays on October 3 (6pm), October 31 (8pm), November 14 (6pm), December 5 (6pm), January 23 (6pm), February 20 (6pm), March 27 (6pm), and April 17 (6pm).

Juilliard presents its Wednesdays at One series in Alice Tully Hall most weeks during the school year with a hiatus during school holidays. The series features free, hour long lunchtime concerts performed by Juilliard artists from all of the school’s divisions. No tickets are required.

The American Brass Quintet is internationally recognized as one of the premier chamber music ensembles of our time, celebrated for peerless leadership in the brass world. The quintet has been in residence at Juilliard since 1987 and the Aspen Music Festival since 1970. This season, in addition to their Juilliard performance, they will appear at the Art Institute of Chicago, the University of Idaho, Barrus Concert Hall and Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, and in Stamford, N.Y., Norfolk, Va., and Bryan, Tex.

Zhu Wang is the first prize winner of the 2nd Zhuhai International Mozart Competition for Young Musicians and the Hilton Head Young Artist Piano Competition. He has been a featured soloist on WQXR’s Young Artist Showcase. He is currently pursuing his BM degree at Juilliard, where he studies with Robert McDonald.

Huan Li is currently pursuing her BM degree at Juilliard and studies with Hung-Kuan Chen. As a solo pianist, she has performed at the Hungarian Embassy in China, the Forbidden City Concert Hall, and the National Grand Theater. She was a substitute soloist for Andreas Haefliger at the Aspen Music Festival and School. She has also performed with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Salzburg Chamber Soloists, and Juilliard Chamber Orchestra.

The concert will be broadcast on the McGraw Family Young Artists Showcase on WQXR at a later date.

The Juilliard String Quartet begins its inaugural season with new first violinist Areta Zhulla, an alumna of Juilliard. She has been a member of Chamber Music Society Two of Lincoln Center and is artistic director of the Perlman-Genesis Violin Project, a series of workshops at the Israel Conservatory. Ms. Zhulla is on the chamber music faculties of Juilliard’s Pre-College Division and the Perlman Music Program.

Israeli pianist Tomer Gewirtzman has performed in recitals in London in Steinway Hall and in Paris in the Salle Cortot of the École Normale. He played with Nikolai Petrov’s Kremlin Festival in cities throughout Russia and has appeared as soloist with orchestras throughout Israel, including the Israel Philharmonic, Israel Symphony Orchestra, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the Israeli Chamber Orchestra, the New Haifa Symphony Orchestra, and the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music Symphony Orchestra. He holds a master’s degree from Juilliard and is continuing his studies in the Artist Diploma program, studying with Sergei Babayan. His bachelor’s degree is from the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music in Tel Aviv, where he studied with Arie Vardi.
