NEW YORK –– Juilliard Jazz presents “Titans of Brazilian Music: Pixinguinha, Santos, and Jobim” featuring Juilliard Jazz Ensembles on Monday, October 29, 2018, at 7:30pm in Paul Hall. The concert will also feature visiting students from EMESP Tom Jobim (São Paulo State Music School). Working with the ensembles is guest coach, Brazilian percussionist and educator, Rogério Boccato. The resident coaches are Bruce Williams and Ulysses Owens Jr.

The Mary Lou Williams Ensemble featuring Kevin Oliver (alto saxophone), Giveton Gelin (trumpet), Rashaan Salaam (trombone), Jake Kelberman (guitar), Isaiah Thompson (piano), Adam Olszewski (bass), and Johnny Steele (drums) will perform Tide (Antônio Carlos Jobim, arr. by Jacob Kelberman); Aquela Valsa (Hermeto Pascoal; arr. by Adam Olzsewski); Mojave (Antônio Carlos Jobim, arr. by John Steele), Viva o Rio de Janeiro (Hermeto Pascoal, arr. by Kevin Oliver), Rota (Hermeto Pascoal, arr. by Isaiah Thompson), Antiqua (Antônio Carlos Jobim, arr. by Rashaan Salaam), Bebê (Hermeto Pascoal, arr. by Giveton Gelin), Hermeto (Hermeto Pascoal, arr. by the ensemble), and São Jorge (Hermeto Pascoal).

The Dave Brubeck Ensemble featuring Immanuel Wilkins (alto saxophone), Anthony Hervey (trumpet), Brendan Lanighan (trombone), Joel Wenhardt (piano), Philip Norris (bass), and alumnus Dag Markhus (drums) will perform Cochichando (Pixinguinha, arr. by Joel Wenhardt); April Child (Moacir Santos, arr. by Anthony Hervey); Hermeto (Hermeto Pascoal, arr. by Philip Norris); Carinhoso (Pixinguinha, arr. by Immanuel Wilkin); Sou Eu (Moacir Santos, arr. by Brendan Langihan); and Um a Zero (Pixinguinha, arr. by Kyle Benford).

About Rogerio Boccato

Brazilian percussionist and educator Rogério Boccato plays in projects led by some of today’s leading jazz players, among them Maria Schneider, John Patitucci, Fred Hersch, Brian Blade, Danilo Perez, and Jimmy Greene. He has collaborated with top-ranking Brazilian artists such as Toninho Horta, Moacir Santos, Zé Renato, and Vinicius Cantuária, and is featured on two Grammy-award winning albums: The Thompson Fields with the Maria Schneider Orchestra, and Billy Childs’ Rebirth. He also performed on three Grammy-nominated albums: Kenny Garrett’s Beyond The Wall, John Patitucci‘s Remembrance (alongside Joe Lovano and Brian Blade), and Alan Ferber’s Jigsaw. As a longtime member of the Orquestra Jazz Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo, he has played with Antônio Carlos Jobim, Hermeto Pascoal, Milton Nascimento, Egberto Gismonti, João Bosco, and Joe Zawinul, among others. Boccato has been a faculty member of the Manhattan School of Music, New York University, and the percussion department of the Hartt School (University of Hartford), teaching Brazilian Music and Ritmica.

About Juilliard Jazz

Juilliard Jazz offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees and the Artist Diploma. The curriculum combines classroom, private studio, and performance ensemble courses with substantial interactions with jazz masters and multiple performance opportunities in diverse venues around the city and the world. The repertoire studied covers the entire jazz continuum, highlights its American vernacular roots, and emphasizes the social and cultural vitality of the music. The program engages students in the global jazz scene, and they have recently performed at festivals in Amsterdam, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, and the Cayman Islands, and in clubs in China, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and Switzerland.

Recent alumni of the program include saxophonists: Sharel Cassity, Jon Irabagon, Paul Nedzela, Peter Reardon-Anderson, and Erica von Kleist; trumpeters Etienne Charles, Dominick Farinacci, Brandon Lee, and Jumaane Smith; trombonists Chris Crenshaw, Michael Dease, Marshall Gilkes, and Ryan Keberle; pianists Jon Batiste, Adam Birnbaum, Kris Bowers, and Aaron Diehl; bassists Joshua Crumbly, Yasushi Nakamura, Luke Sellick, and Ben Williams; and drummers McClenty Hunter, Jerome Jennings, Ulysses Owens Jr., and Joe Saylor.
