NEW YORK –– Artist in residence William Christie and his musical colleague Paul Agnew, who makes his Juilliard debut, will each lead a program that explores the fearless creativity of George Frideric Handel during the composer’s fruitful years as a young man in Rome. The programs on November 19, 2018, and December 1, 2018, feature singers from Juilliard’s Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts and the instrumentalists of Juilliard415 in Handel’s early dramatic chamber cantatas.

“Handel in Rome I” features Handel’s Aminta e Fillide: Arresta il passo, HWV 83, with sopranos Shakèd Bar and Jessica Niles, and takes place on Monday, November 19, 2018, at 7:30pm at the Morgan Library (225 Madison Avenue); “Handel in Rome II” features Handel’s Clori, Tirsi e Fileno, HWV 96, with sopranos Anneliese Klenetsky and Mer Wohlgemuth, and guest countertenor Siman Chung, and takes place on Saturday, December 1, 2018, at 7:30pm at Alice Tully Hall.

“Handel in Rome I” Bios

Harpsichordist, conductor, musicologist, and teacher William Christie has spearheaded the reintroduction of French Baroque music to a wide audience. Born in Buffalo, and educated at Harvard and Yale, Christie has lived in France since 1971. The turning point in his career came in 1979, when he founded Les Arts Florissants. As director of this vocal and instrumental ensemble, he made his mark in both the concert hall and the opera house. Major public recognition came in 1987 with the production of Lully’s Atys at the Opéra Comique in Paris, which then went on to tour internationally. Christie has also led many acclaimed performances of works by such Italian Baroque masters as Monteverdi, Rossi, and Scarlatti, as well as works by Purcell, Handel, Mozart, and Haydn.

As a guest conductor, Christie often appears at opera festivals including Glyndebourne (notably Hippolyte et Aricie in 2013) and at such opera houses as the Metropolitan Opera, Zurich Opera, and Opéra National de Lyon. Between 2002 and 2007, he regularly appeared as a guest conductor with the Berlin Philharmonic. His extensive discography includes more than 100 recordings; some of his most recent were released by Les Arts Florissants: Belshazzar and Music for Queen Caroline by Handel, as well as Le Jardin de Monsieur Rameau.

Since 2007 he has been artist in residence at Juilliard, where he gives master classes twice a year accompanied by the musicians of Les Arts Florissants. In 2002, Christie created a biennial academy for young singers in Caen, the Jardin des Voix, whose winners tour with Les Arts Florissants in France, Europe, and the U.S.

Jerusalem born soprano Shakèd Bar is a Graduate Diploma student at Juilliard, where she studies with Edith Bers. Among the roles she has performed are Fiordiligi in Festival della Valle d’Itria’s Così fan tutte with Fabio Luisi, Poppea and Nerone in Monteverdi’s L'incoronazione di Poppea, Dido in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Zerlina in Mozart’s Don Giovanni and La Grande Prêtresse and Une Chasseresse in Rameau's Hippolyte et Aricie. This season, she will be singing the soprano solo in Handel’s Messiah at Carnegie Hall with the Cecilia Chorus of New York, and Dido in Juilliard Opera’s Dido and Aeneas in New York, the European tour, and the Joye in Aiken Festival. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.

Virginia native Jessica Niles, a soprano, is currently a fourth-year undergraduate at Juilliard under the tutelage of Marlena Malas. Most recently, Niles performed Adina in L’elisir d’amore with City Lyric Opera and with the Chautauqua Institution, Une Matelote in Hippolyte et Aricie at Juilliard, Anne Page in Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor at Juilliard, and Julie in Carousel at the Chautauqua Institution. Recent chamber performances include Schoenberg’s Second String Quartet in Juilliard’s ChamberFest 2018, and The Opposite of Loneliness: A Chamber Piece (Wenzelberg), which she commissioned and premiered spring of 2018. She is an alumna of Houston Grand Opera’s Young Artist Vocal Academy and Juilliard Pre-College. She has won awards from the National YoungArts Foundation, the National Society of Arts and Letters, and the George London Foundation.

“Handel in Rome II” Bios

Paul Agnew is in continuous demand as an outstanding interpreter of Baroque and pre-Classical repertoire. His long association with the world’s leading conductors in the field of early music includes a discography of more than 100 recordings. Born in Glasgow, he was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford, before embarking on an acclaimed vocal career that has taken him through the world.

His transition to a conducting career began following a highly successful debut with Les Arts Florissants in Paris in 2007, when William Christie appointed him joint musical director of the orchestra; he has since gone on to lead the orchestra on tour to major venues such as the Wiener Konzerthaus; throughout France; and to Salzburg, China, and Lincoln Center.

In the U.S., Agnew makes frequent appearances with Chicago’s Music of the Baroque, most recently leading the group in a concert of Handel, Vivaldi, and Pergolesi. He is a regular at Juilliard and has made guest appearances with the Houston, Seattle, and North Carolina symphonies, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and Portland Baroque Orchestra.

A native of Busan, South Korea, countertenor Siman Chung returns to the Metropolitan Opera this season for its production of Juilliard alumnus Nico Muhly's Marnie. In spring 2019, he creates a leading role of a new opera Sadness and Beauty, which will have its world premiere in Hong Kong. Earlier this year, Chung sang the title role in the Berlioz edition of Gluck’s Orphée with Opera Columbus, in Toronto, and at the Banff Festival. He appeared with Korean National Opera in Vivaldi’s Orlando fintzo pazzo. Chung made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2015 singing Handel’s Messiah, and made his New York recital debut in 2017, presented by Opera Index, as a winner of its major prize. He also received first prize of Gerda Lissner Foundation, best countertenor award in Barcelona’s Viñas Competition, and a grant from the Sullivan Foundation.

Soprano Anneliese Klenetsky is a second year MM degree student at Juilliard under the tutelage of Sanford Sylvan. She was most recently the soloist in the New York premiere of A Sibyl by James Primosch at MoMA, led by Joel Sachs. She collaborated with Juilliard415 and Vox Luminis on Handel’s Laudate Pueri Dominum. Recent opera repertoire includes the Governess in Britten's The Turn of the Screw, Amaranta in Haydn’s La fedeltà premiata and La bergère/Un Pâtre in Ravel's L’enfant et les sortilèges. She has sung numerous world premieres, including Jonathan Dawe’s Oroborium with New Juilliard Ensemble, Theo Chandler's Songs for Brooches with the Juilliard Orchestra at Alice Tully Hall, and Jake Landau’s Les danseuses de Pigalle at New York Live Arts.

Soprano Mer Wohlgemuth, from Winter Haven, Fla., is pursuing her MM degree at Juilliard, where she studies with Marlena Malas. She has performed in two different productions of Die Zauberflöte with the Berlin Opera Academy and the Southern Illinois Music Festival as the Zweiter Knaben, as well as Nerone in the Harrower Summer Workshop Young Artist Program’s L’incoronazione di Poppea. She won an Encouragement Award at the 2017 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (Upper Midwest Region) and second place in Nebraska State and Midwest Regional NATS (2017).  She earned her bachelor’s degree from Concordia University in Nebraska.

Since its founding in 2009, Juilliard415, the school’s principal period-instrument ensemble, has made significant contributions to musical life in New York and beyond, bringing major figures in the field of early music to lead performances of both rare and canonical works of the 17th and 18th centuries. The ensemble’s most recent international appearances were in Bolivia, in a tour sponsored by the U.S. Department of State that marked the ensemble’s South America debut. The 2017-18 season was notable for the Juilliard debuts of the rising conductor Jonathan Cohen and the Belgian vocal ensemble Vox Luminis, a side-by-side collaboration with Philharmonia Baroque in San Francisco, as well as return visits by Rachel Podger, William Christie, an all-Bach concert with Maestro Suzuki, and the rare opportunity to see a fully staged production of Rameau’s Hippolyte et Aricie. This season’s international schedule includes performances in Canada, London, Athens, Versailles, and throughout Scandinavia. In New York, Juilliard415 welcomes Alfredo Bernardini for his Juilliard debut.
