The Juilliard community will join the world in celebrating the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with a series of events for and by the students.

Once everyone has returned to Juilliard after the national holiday, on Monday, January 16, faculty members Renée Baron, chair of liberal arts, and Fredara Hadley, ethnomusicologist, will lead a discussion for students about Nina Simone. This iconic singer and Civil Rights activist studied in Juilliard’s summer program in the 1950s. The discussion takes place Tuesday in the Writing and Communication Center.

Throughout the rest of the week of reflective programming there will be an Office of Student Affairs-led current events discussion, a Diversity Advocate- and Green Club-led service project cleaning up a local park, and other performances and activities. And the culmination of the school’s King celebration takes place Monday, January 23, when musician, composer, and Creative Associate Rhiannon Giddens gives the 10th annual MLK Speaker Series talk followed by a Q&A with Weston Sprott, dean and director of the Preparatory Division.
