Postcards From Juilliard Alums

After graduating, I spent one year as a staff accompanist at Juilliard before moving back to Canada to get married and, five days later, begin my doctorate in collaborative piano at McGill University. My husband and I have enjoyed living in Montreal, a city with a vibrant arts community similar to that of New York.

My doctoral work is in performance and research, with the performance work typically in collaboration with singers, as it was at Juilliard. I have worked as a repetiteur for Opera McGill, and my most recent piano recital featured soprano Emily Richter, a winner of the 2024 Metropolitan Opera Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition. I had such a formative experience at Juilliard, and I’m thankful that McGill has offered me the opportunity to continue nurturing my performance skills and collaborative relationships.

In my research, I’m exploring play-based learning approaches in children’s music education. Researching children’s natural learning through their free play assists me in my work as a music teacher and director of a children’s choir, and I’m enjoying sharing my findings with music teacher associations through written publications and conference presentations.

Juilliard prepared me in so many ways for a dynamic and varied career in music filled with performing, recording, collaborating, writing, and presenting. I will be forever thankful for the professors, colleagues, and friends I met there!
