Reflecting on a Thrilling Year

Just after spring break, we asked students—some graduating, some staying on—to reflect about what they’d been doing lately, their hobbies, and some highlights of their time at Juilliard. In addition, some shared how scholarship support has helped them and what they’re doing this summer.

A pianist and a French horn player are performing together in a well-lit indoor space. The pianist is seated at a grand piano, while the French horn player stands beside him, actively playing. In the background, there is a large framed image of a singer passionately performing, adding an artistic atmosphere to the scene.

Spring break
I highly enjoyed reading, petting my cat, and spending time with family! I also performed the Grieg Piano Concerto with second-year master’s pianist Zhu Wang (BM ’20) at Carnegie Hall.

Highlights

  • Reading the Nicomachean Ethics and the Analects of Confucius deepened my outlook and truly enriched my life experience! Having lunches with liberal arts faculty member Sandro de Thomasis not only did those two things but also filled me up inside. But nothing has been more gratifying than staying up late with my friends and talking about Anthony Netz’s music history class and whatever other tangents come up.
  • Reviving the Juilliard chess club, the Knights. When I was a freshman, I found that the chess club wasn’t up and running, but that it could be if I would “love what I do, and love it in front of people.” With the slogan Beating Your Best Self, we started up in January 2023 and have been going strong ever since.

Hobbies
Rock climbing, ice skating, reading, and writing—and I would like to thank those hobbies as well as all of my friends and family for teaching me more about music than all my years of practice and study.
