David Robertson Conducts First Program in Juilliard’s 2024-25 New Series
Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at 7:30pm
NEW YORK, October 2, 2024—The New Series at Juilliard kicks off its third season with a concert celebrating the music of 20th-century icons Arnold Schoenberg and Pierre Boulez. Co-presented by Juilliard and the New York Philharmonic, this concert joins schoolwide celebrations for the 150th birthday of Schoenberg and 100th anniversary of Boulez’s birth.
Musicians from the Juilliard Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic join forces for one performance on October 9 at Juilliard, led by Juilliard’s director of conducting studies, and a specialist in this repertoire, David Robertson. Philharmonic musicians include concertmaster Frank Huang (Juilliard violin and chamber music faculty member), principal clarinet Anthony McGill (artistic director of Juilliard’s Music Advancement Program and faculty member), and associate principal percussion Daniel Druckman (chair of Juilliard’s percussion department).
The side-by-side features Schoenberg’s Suite, Op. 29—a septet in four movements written a century ago—and Boulez’s sur Incises for piano, harp, and percussion. Robertson led the world premiere of this work in 1998, and Boulez also served as the New York Philharmonic music director from 1971 to 1977 and on the Juilliard faculty from 1972 to 1975.
The New Series—conceived by Juilliard’s dean and director of music, David Serkin Ludwig, who also serves as the series’ curator and artistic director—features new and recent music presented in innovative ways. This year, the series features five curated programs that bring together students from across Juilliard’s divisions for cross-genre collaborations. Each program includes a preconcert talk that dives into the program: On October 9, Ludwig and three students will discuss why Schoenberg and Boulez remain relevant to this generation of musicians.
The New Series preconcert talk is open to all ticket holders. This performance will also be livestreamed on the Juilliard website.
