As the world careened into shutdown five years ago, the Juilliard community quickly came together to ensure that our students were safe. We may have been physically scattered around the globe, but the learning and practicing continued apace:

  • A record number of students took advantage of the opportunity to study secondary Historical Performance instruments.
  • Conducting students made videos of themselves silently conducting an excerpt from a Haydn concerto, after which 12 instrumentalists recorded themselves playing their parts based solely on the conductors’ cues.
  • Remote lessons and classes, virtual game nights, and synced Zoom performances helped bring—and keep—the community together.
