Doctoral Forum: Sacred Spectacle in the 17th-Century Viennese Court

Tuesday, February 16 at 5pm EST

Click here to register for the Zoom webinar

The term “spectacle” as it describes 17th-century dramatic musicinvolving action, costumes, and artworkis often only applied to secular works. Doctoral student Adam Cockerham (MM 17, historical performance) argues that while grand-scale compositions were created within a religious context across Europe, this type of spectacle rarely crossed into the sacred idiom and was avoided in adherence to religious censorship. This lecture-performance defines the Viennese sepolcro genre, the most common sacred dramatic genre; highlights its spectacular aspects; and places these works in a religiopolitical context within the Habsburg court of Emperor Leopold I, who reigned from 1658 to 1705.
