Each year The Juilliard School hosts a weeklong seminar to foster the artistic growth of pre-formed, pre-professional string quartets. Through intensive coaching and mentoring with members of the Juilliard String Quartet, as well as interaction with other participating quartets, students are able to refine their artistry in a stimulating artistic environment. Individuals with compelling interest may also be considered for attendance at the Seminar as non-performing auditors.
The dates for this year's seminar are: Monday, May 15 through Friday, May 19, 2017.
To apply, quartets must submit an application and the required recordings through our online application by January 3, 2017.
The seminar begins Monday, May 15, 2017, and ends on Friday, May 19, 2017. Participating quartets may not have any other obligations during this time.
Each quartet will receive two daily coachings with members of the Juilliard String Quartet, have a rehearsal studio, and perform in a public concert at Juilliard.
Two works of contrasting styles will be studied. It is expected that the quartet will have performed these works in a public concert prior to arrival at Juilliard.
The Juilliard School will make reasonable accommodations for students, guests and community members with qualified disabilities. If you need to request a disability-related accommodation, please notify the Office of Academic Support and Disability Services as soon as possible (but ideally no later than 2-3 weeks prior to your arrival on campus) to ensure timely accommodation.
Recordings should include three movements, one each from the following periods:
The Juilliard String Quartet reviews all of the submissions and selects the quartets invited to participate. Potential auditors will be considered on an individual basis. To apply as an auditor, you must submit an email to the Office of Admission for a separate application process.
The application deadline for the Juilliard String Quartet Seminar is Tuesday, January 3, at 11:59PM EST.
The application fee is $65 and must be submitted with your application. Your application is not considered complete until we have received your payment.
The tuition for this year's seminar is $400 per quartet and $80 per auditor.
Juilliard cannot assist international quartets, or auditors, in acquiring visas for the Seminar.
Quartets will be notified of their admissions decision by Friday, April 8.
