Fall 2020 COVID-19 Academic Plan

Introduction and Process

Juilliard has reinvented the 2020-21 academic year in light of the many challenges and uncertainties created by the ongoing COVID-19 global health crisis. To help guide our decision-making, the Office of the Provost appointed 14 working groups involving more than 70 staff and faculty across departments throughout the school. Members of the Juilliard Community can view the working groups here. We have also consulted with medical and engineering experts, compiled survey data from the community, and sought input from members of the Juilliard Student Congress. While it is not possible to eliminate all risks, the changes we are making to our school year and the safety plans we are putting in place are meant to guard against those risks to the extent possible. To be successful, this plan will require all members of our community to take appropriate precautions and follow all safety guidelines.

The working groups were asked to make recommendations with two overriding commitments in mind: 1) community safety and 2) the integrity of the educational experience. The plan presented here aims to provide a pathway where these two commitments intersect.

The Calendar

In order to deliver the highest quality educational experience possible, we have reinvented the academic calendar and reimagined how our educational content can be delivered with maximum flexibility. All our work is informed by public health guidelines. 

Our academic year began with a brand-new Juilliard Summer Term including for-credit and non-credit offerings with no additional tuition charge. Over 300 students took credit-bearing courses and hundreds more students and faculty are engaged in studio and performance classes, the Liberal Arts department’s Camp Juilliard, virtual projects such as our Community Cadence series and other departmental activities. 

The year has continued under the latest health guidelines with an elongated fall semester divided into three 7-week blocks: Block 1 was fully online but with the building available as a resource, Block 2 phases in on-campus learning and performance work, and Block 3 will remain in a hybrid mode focusing on major study and performance opportunities. While the spring semester officially begins on March 1, many spring semester academic courses will begin early and will be delivered completely online. The spring semester will conclude with an intensive seven weeks of performance-only activities.  

This plan: 

  • Makes the best use of remote online learning while delaying and phasing in on-campus learning and performance work. 

  • Preserves a meaningful period of time to focus on major study and performance work 

  • Reduces density in the building and in the residence hall 

  • Provides enhanced opportunities, including added weeks of instruction and a summer term, at no additional cost to students. 

  • Invests in resources, training, and technology to help ensure the online work meets our standard of excellence 

  • Prioritizes equitable access to resources and opportunities across departments and programs 

  • Provides the flexibility to respond to health concerns, potential travel restrictions, and international student visa delays 

  • Allows us to respond to changing conditions and health guidelines as necessary 

Below is an outline of how we envision each block. The details of each block are subject to change if required by public health guidance as the situation continues to evolve. 

Dates below are specific to the College Division—the Preparatory Division will follow a similar plan, and specific dates can be found here

Summer Term – Online for credit and non-credit offerings – 6 weeks
July 6 – August 14
  • Optional, included in fall-semester tuition

Fall Term – Block 1—Online, Building Available as Resource—7 weeks
August 31 – October 16
  • First half of 14-week courses, possible 7-week courses

  • Building access for students who need it, with approval and advanced reservation, subject to health guidelines

  • Residence hall students with specific needs may move in by request

  • Limited access for staff and faculty as needed

  • No public or guest access to building

 

Fall Term— Block 2 – Hybrid Online and In-Person—7 weeks
October 29 – December 18
  • Option for individual students to remain fully online
  • Phased-in small group performance classes and rehearsals on campus

  • Second half of 14-week courses (most online, some in-person if possible)

  • Building access, subject to building guidelines and screening protocols, which will be based on health and safety guidance available at that time

  • In-person small group work allowed (pending health guidelines)

  • Small ensemble performances and preparation for Block 3 ensemble performances

  • Livestreamed performances and recording projects

  • Residence hall contracts begin—cap of 250 students allowing for single room occupancy

Fall Term: Block 3 – Focus on Major Study and Performance Work AND  Early start of spring semester academic classes – Hybrid Online and In-Person – 6 weeks 

Monday, January 11 – Friday, February 19  
  • Fall Term Block 3 work: including the second half of any performance or practicum classes that started in Block 2 and in-person performance activities. In-person performance work will follow the same safety protocols as currently in place for Block 2. Block 3 activities will conclude on February 19 and fall semester grades will be issued shortly after.  

  • Many spring semester academic classes (for example, Liberal Arts, Music Theory and Analysis, Music History, Graduate Studies, and Ear Training) will begin early and run from Monday, January 11 to Friday, April 23.  These courses will be delivered completely online. Dance and Drama academic courses will be coordinated directly through the divisions and they will be in touch with Block 3 and spring semester schedules as soon as possible.  A complete list of courses that start on January 11 will be made available as part of the advisement and registration process.  

  • Option for individual students to remain fully online 

  • Building access with health-screening, physical distancing, and health and safety protocols as appropriate 

  • In-person small group work allowed, according to current health guidelines

Health and Safety Update

#JuilliardThrivesTogether, and our success depends on our collective willingness to follow the same set of health and safety procedures. A key component of this safety plan is YOU. These plans are only effective with your cooperation, and we are relying on everyone who enters the building to observe the safety procedures.

Our safety plan is being developed in consultation with medical experts, an outside engineering firm, and our health and facilities colleagues at Lincoln Center. These procedures and safety protocols provided for safe and limited use of the building in Block 1 for those who needed it, and will prepare us for a hybrid learning environment in Block 2, and allow for in-person performance work along with a hybrid learning environment during Block 3.

For as long as health guidelines require, each person entering the building will be required to follow all safety protocols, including physical distancing, handwashing, wearing face coverings, cleaning protocols, following new traffic patterns in the building, and other requirements.

The following protocols have been put in place to protect the community:

Testing

Testing will be a key part of our safety plans. For Block 2, we will require testing in two different but equally important ways: 

  • Baseline Testing: Juilliard currently requires that all students and faculty who have in-person interaction with students be tested prior to coming to campus. Important Note: ALL Block 2 participants will again be required to provide a negative COVID diagnostic test dated within 10 days of your first entry (or re-entry) to the Juilliard facilities, even if you have already had a baseline test for Block 1.

    • Residential students who are currently quarantining in the Residence Hall do not need to provide an additional baseline test, as they have already submitted a baseline test prior to beginning quarantine.

    • Please see the below section on “Baseline Testing” for details, including for information about where to get a test and how to submit student test results.

  • Routine Community Testing: In addition to the required baseline testing, the school is inaugurating weekly routine COVID diagnostic testing for Block 2. All residential students are required to be tested every week. Nonresidential students, faculty, and staff will be randomly selected for testing weekly and are required to participate if selected. 

    For Block 2, Juilliard’s routine testing will take place on-campus and without charge, through Cayuga Health System. The test is a self-administered saliva test, which has a high rate of accuracy and a fast (1-2 day) turnaround time. We will announce dates, times, and locations of routine COVID testing beginning the week of November 2. In the meantime, an instructional video may be found here

    We expect and require that anyone selected for testing will participate.

    If a test comes back positive, the department of health, the school, and the individual will be notified, and appropriate steps will be taken to assist the individual and protect the community.

    As a reminder, anyone who is experiencing symptoms or who has been in contact with a COVID-positive person must immediately get tested using a PCR (nasal swab) test. Please be in touch with the appropriate office ([email protected] for students, [email protected] for faculty and staff), and be sure to fill out this form right away to ensure that you get appropriate medical attention and help keep our community safe. This is the procedure for all enrolled students, whether residential or nonresidential, whether in-person, hybrid, or all-remote for Block 2.

    Please know that testing alone is not an effective strategy; it must work alongside other safety measures, including wearing masks, social distancing, staying out of crowds, frequent hand washing, and general good hygiene and cleaning.

  • Flu Shots: Flu shots are now widely available nationwide, and we strongly encourage everyone to receive their flu shot this year. The flu vaccine prevents millions of illnesses and flu-related doctor’s visits each year. Information on flu shot availability for students will be forthcoming from Health Services. While getting a flu vaccine will not protect against COVID-19, there are many important benefits, including:

    a. Flu vaccines have been shown to reduce the risk of flu illness, hospitalization, and other severe health consequences. 

    b. Getting a flu vaccine can also save healthcare resources for the care of patients with COVID-19.

Baseline Testing

Juilliard currently requires that all who plan to be on campus be tested prior to coming to campus—this requirement also applies to those arriving in time for Block 2 or 3.

Important Note: Juilliard also requires that ALL Block 2 participants provide a negative COVID diagnostic test dated within 10 days of your first entry (or re-entry) to the Juilliard facilities, even if you have already done a baseline test for Block 1.

This testing will help prevent anyone from unknowingly bringing the virus with them and give us a baseline understanding of the status of our community. Your test must be a PCR (nasal swab or saliva) COVID-19 diagnostic test, not an antibody test.

  • Residential students: This test must take place within 10 days prior to your Block 2 move-in date. If your initial return to the residence hall is planned for after the beginning of Block 2, your test must take place within 10 days prior to your initial return. Results must be provided before you arrive on campus.
  • Students living off-campus: Your test must take place within 10 days prior the beginning of Block 2. If your initial return to the campus is to take place after the beginning of Block 2, your test must take place within 10 days prior to your initial return. Some off-campus students may be required to quarantine.  If so, you should get tested after your quarantine has finished.

Students must electronically send a scan or photo of their negative test result to Student Health Services ([email protected]) or upload it to Medicat (located in OKTA).

In New York State, testing is free to all eligible New Yorkers as ordered by a health care provider or by calling the NYS COVID-19 hotline at (888)364-3065. If you go to a test site run by New York State, there is no charge. NYS testing 

New York City offers free testing through the City Health & Hospitals Corporation; NYC locations 

If you have COVID-19 symptoms, have been informed by a contact tracer or other health professional that you have been exposed, are in a household with someone who is sick or has tested positive, or yourself have tested positive within 14 days of coming back to campus, please do not come to campus, and let Student Health Services know right away so we can provide support and any necessary arrangements. 

Health Screening and Testing

Anyone entering the Juilliard facilities, including on-campus and off-campus facilities, will first use an app to fill out a screening questionnaire. This questionnaire, which will be required once per day, verifies that the user is not currently experiencing any COVID-19–related symptoms. In addition, there will be a contactless temperature check and verification of face covering prior to entrance. Only those who have been notified via email that they have been approved by the Office of the Provost for regular building access will receive the daily screening questionnaire and QR code which is necessary to enter. Community members should still only come to the Diamond Building on days when they have a confirmed reservation for in-person activities in the building.

Students, faculty, or staff members who develop symptoms of COVID-19 or knowingly come in contact with someone who has tested positive will be required to take a diagnostic test and to quarantine while awaiting the result. In addition, any community member who tests positive for COVID-19 at any point will be required to immediately inform health services (students) or human resources (faculty or staff) so that we can coordinate contact tracing through the NYC Track and Trace Program and implement enhanced cleaning and disinfecting procedures.

Additional rooms in the Residence Hall are being reserved for Residence Hall students who need to isolate due to a suspected case of COVID-19 or a positive COVID-19 test result. If a residence hall student is found to test positive, they will move to an isolation suite and a contact-tracing process will begin.

If any student tests positive after arrival on campus, their care will be coordinated by Health Services. Medical care may include testing and appointments outside of Juilliard. If so, these will be billed to the student’s health insurance plan, as usual.

We continue to work with our medical consultants and partners in the community to determine appropriate ongoing testing strategies. 

Symptomatic Testing and Contact Tracing

The school has appointed a COVID Response team, which is led by the COVID Response Coordinator. If you receive a call from a Juilliard COVID coordinator, please respond right away and follow the instructions precisely so we can help you keep yourself and our community safe. To aid in this process, please be sure your contact information is up to date in WebAdvisor, including providing your US-based phone number.  

Required Reporting of Positive Test Results

In order to comply with current New York State regulations, all Juilliard students, staff, and faculty who test positive for COVID-19 are REQUIRED to report their test results to the school. To do so, you must follow these two important steps:

  • Students should Immediately contact Health Services at (212)799-5000, ext. 282 or email [email protected] during the workday. If it is after hours or on the weekend, please contact the Student Development staff member on-call at 1-866-885-7227.

    Faculty and staff should contact Human Resources at [email protected].
  • Fill out the COVID-19 Reporting Form. This form may also be used to request assistance if you suspect that you or another Juilliard community member may have been infected or exposed to COVID-19, or if you have symptoms (including but not limited to coughing, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fever, sore throat, or loss of taste or smell). Please be sure to include a phone number where you can be reached.

These steps will alert Juilliard’s COVID response team and connect you, and anyone with whom you have been in contact, with important resources and information, and allow the school to take steps to further protect the community. Other people will only be updated on a need-to-know basis.

The school has hired three administrative staff to assist with services related to our COVID response management. The new COVID Response Coordinator will provide essential communication, routing, and administrative support for Juilliard students, faculty, and staff, as well as assist with the school’s daily mandatory New York State COVID-19 reporting. Two new staff members have also joined the residence life team to assist with meal delivery and other accommodations being provided for residential students during and-post quarantine.

Quarantine Information

New York State recently announced new quarantine rules that permit those traveling into New York State to “test out” of the full 14-day quarantine. The state has since clarified that this new rule applies to people arriving from both domestic and international locations. The only exception is for those coming from states that border New York—Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont—who will not be required to quarantine or test. Please note that these rules are subject to change at any time; we urge all community members to remain aware of any travel restrictions and quarantine rules.   

Effective immediately and in keeping with New York State guidelines, Juilliard’s quarantine requirements are: 

All travelers entering New York State from anywhere other than a bordering state shall quarantine for a period of 14 days, consistent with Department of Health regulations for quarantine, unless you complete BOTH of the following: 

  1. Obtain a pre-travel test: For travelers who traveled outside of New York for more than 24 hours, such travelers must obtain testing within 72 hours prior to arrival in New York  AND 
  2. Such travelers must, according to Department of Health guidelines, upon arrival in New York, quarantine for a minimum of three days, measured from time of arrival. On day four, they may seek a post-travel diagnostic test, await the result, and if negative, exit quarantine. 

Anyone who fails to receive both of the required tests must quarantine for the full 14 days. 

Travelers who leave New York State for less than 24 hours do not need to obtain a diagnostic test before departing and do not need to quarantine upon return. However, such travelers must fill out the traveler form upon entry and must obtain a diagnostic test on the fourth day after returning to New York. 

Should you find you need to adjust your travel plans due to a change in restrictions, please notify your department and they will make accommodations to your schedule to allow for your quarantine. If you are a Residence Hall student and your travel dates change, please contact [email protected] immediately.

According to the New York State Department of Health, an individual quarantining must follow the Precautionary Quarantine Requirements set forth here. Among other rules, you “must not be in public or otherwise leave the quarters that they have identified as suitable for their quarantine.” This means that during quarantine, students will not be permitted to go to social meet-ups or gatherings, parks, restaurants, stores, or classes. You will need to stay home during this time. 

Non-Residence Hall students should also note that even after your quarantine, you will only be permitted to enter certain areas in the Residence Hall, such as Student Health Services (a prescreened appointment must be made in advance). Most areas of the Residence Hall will not permit visitors until further notice. 

For both residential and nonresidential students

Students will continue to take their online classes while in quarantine, and the provost’s and academic affairs offices will work with students in quarantine to provide academic support and accommodations. The student development office will provide links to enrichment and wellness programs, as well as a list of resources addressing needs such as food and grocery delivery. Counseling services will remain available to students via remote sessions.

These rules are subject to change in the coming weeks as governmental guidelines and the situation in New York City evolves, and you should make your travel plans accordingly.

Block 3 Quarantine and Testing Rules 

All students are required to submit a baseline test before the start of Block 3 (January 11). If you are required to test as part of the New York State travel restrictions, your travel-related testing will satisfy this requirement. If you are not traveling out of New York State, your test should be dated within 10 days of entering the building for the first time in Block 3. 

Those who leave New York State (with the exception of those traveling to New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, or Pennsylvania) between Blocks 2 and 3 or who are arriving for the first time for Block 3 are advised to adhere to the following schedule:  

  • Obtain Pre-Travel Test: 72 hours prior to arrival time in New York State 

  • Arrive in New York State: Saturday, January 2  

  • Observe Three-Day Quarantine, measured from time of arrival  

  • Obtain Post-Travel Test: Wednesday, January 6 

  • Post-Travel test results must be submitted before approval to enter the building will be granted 

  • Block 3 starts: Monday, January 11

Quarantine Details for Residence Hall Students

Residence Hall students who travel between Blocks 2 and 3, or who are arriving for the first time for Block 3, will be required to follow the quarantine “test out” procedures listed above. Students who travel will no longer be allowed to quarantine for 14 days in the Residence Hall in lieu of this new testing-out procedure announced by the Governor's office. 

During a required quarantine period, residence hall students will need to remain in their assigned bedroom and bathroom and will not be able to access any other parts of the Rose Building nor will they be able to enter the Diamond Building. There is more information about this process below. 

Due to the strict nature of New York State quarantine rules, students should plan to arrive on campus with enough supplies and clothing for the quarantine period. 

The Office of Residence Life will arrange AVI boxed-meal delivery for residential students throughout this period. Please inform us of any food restrictions/allergies ahead of time. 

Throughout quarantine, students will not be permitted to leave their assigned bedroom and bathroom and will be subject to the terms of the student code of conduct if they are found in violation of this requirement. 

During quarantine, students will not have access to practice rooms or common areas (lounges, laundry, community kitchen, etc.). Practicing will be allowed in your individual room—questions about this should be directed to [email protected].

Block 3 Arrivals

Residence Hall students who are required to quarantine must arrive on Saturday, January 2. Travel-related quarantines will only be supported by the Residence Hall staff starting Saturday, January 2. These students will be tested on Wednesday, January 6, and will be released from quarantine once results are received. Residence Hall students required to quarantine will not be allowed to arrive prior to January 2. The above schedule adheres to current governmental guidance, which is subject to change. 

Residence Hall students who are not required to quarantine and all students living off-campus: You should arrive in time to take a post-travel baseline test on Wednesday, January 6. This will allow sufficient time to receive test results and process your approval to enter the building. Arrivals after this date must be approved by your department and will delay your access to the building for in-person work.  

Student Travel Rules

As a reminder, to limit risk of exposure to the virus, we are strongly discouraging any nonessential travel during the Thanksgiving break.   

Following updated guidance from Governor Cuomo’s office, if you do travel out of New York State over Thanksgiving, or at any other time, you are required to:  

  1. Fill out this travel form at least two weeks prior to travel. For anyone traveling between November 23 and 29, you must submit this form by this Wednesday, November 11.  
  2. Take a COVID test no later than 3 days before your expected travel away for Thanksgiving.
  3. Upon return to New York State, follow the above quarantine and testing rules as required by New York State. Returning students are required to submit confirmation of a negative test prior to resuming in-person activity on campus. 
  4. International students should contact the Office of International Advisement ([email protected]) before making any international travel plans. 

These rules may change in the coming weeks pending health conditions and governmental guidance. Please be prepared to adjust your Thanksgiving travel plans if required. 

Face Coverings and Instrumental PPE Requirements

As stated in our Community Pledge, face coverings will be required at all times in the building unless you are alone in a private room with the door closed or if you are eating. Only two-ply (minimum) cloth masks or surgical masks will be allowed. Two washable, reusable cloth face coverings will be provided to each member of the community, and you are also welcome to wear your own. Bandanas, neck gaiters, and masks with vents or valves will not be allowed. Masks should fit tightly, and cover both the nose and mouth at all times. Disposable face coverings will be available at the main security desk for anyone who arrives without one. 

Wind and brass players who are engaged in in-person lessons or ensemble work will be provided with adapted specialty masks, bell covers, and key bags. We are working on obtaining supplies of this equipment to provide to those who require it. One set will be provided at no cost to the student, and additional supplies will be available for purchase. More information about how to obtain these supplies will be provided next week.  

Residence Hall students will be required to wear a face covering in the Residence Hall unless they are alone in their own rooms. 

Building Usage

The Diamond Building will function differently during this academic year. In addition to the required screening when entering the building, there will be one-way staircases and hallways as well as floor markers to maintain physical distancing. Room and elevator capacity will be reduced and clearly marked. Plexiglas barriers are being installed where in-person interaction is required, including in teaching studios where appropriate. Improvements are being made to lighting and signage in stairwells. 

Attendance Support

Students, faculty, and staff are urged to remain home if ill. Students should refer to their course syllabi and to Attendance Requirements for Academic Courses for more information. Faculty and staff with questions about absences should contact Human Resources.

The Juilliard faculty and staff are committed to ensuring that all students have the support they need to attend and successfully complete their online coursework. If you need help due to conditions at home or in your local community, please communicate your needs directly with your faculty member. If you need further support, you are strongly encouraged to contact either the Academic Affairs office, or the Office of Academic Support and Disability Support Services (if you need help with a documented disability).

Other Helpful New York Resources

New York State has released a new app called COVID Alert NY that allows you to anonymously, privately, and securely track and get notified if you’ve been exposed to someone who tests positive. We recommend each member of the community take a moment to read about this new tool and download the app. You can also track cases at schools throughout New York, including at Juilliard, on the New York State COVID-19 School Report Card.

Compliance with Safety and Health Rule

For your own health and the health of those around you, including students, faculty, and staff, it is extremely important for everyone to follow these safety and health rules. Tremendous progress has been made in New York to reduce the spread of COVID-19, including a great effort on the part of the general public to follow safety protocols such as wearing masks, physical distancing, frequent hand-washing, staying home when sick, getting tested when needed, and providing the necessary information for contact tracing.

We plan to enforce our health and safety rules, and we will not tolerate repeated or serious lapses. Violating the safety rules can result in sanctions according to our code of conduct.

This is a moment of challenge and change for everyone. But working together, we can help keep each other safe.

Technology Enhancements and Training

Significant effort is being made to improve access to a range of technologies for this upcoming year.

In preparation for fall semester instruction, students and faculty in the college are able to utilize a $150 credit in the Juilliard Store to purchase technology and remote learning products from a designated list of equipment. This list of equipment offered at a discount includes a range of basic items such as USB microphones, headphones, ethernet cables, webcams, portable lighting, squares of marley floors for dancers, and more. Additional financial support specifically for equipment will be made available through the Financial Aid office for those students who demonstrate need.

At this time, The Juilliard Store is accepting requests for items for the fall semester only. View the list of items and submit your request through this form on MyJuilliard. Once you submit your request form, a Juilliard Store representative will contact you to fill your order and complete your purchase.

In addition, the school is investing in enhanced livestreaming capabilities aimed at delivering greatly improved video and audio quality for performances from venues throughout the building. We expect this work to be completed in time for Block 3 performances.

Classroom faculty have been offered a range of training opportunities this summer to enhance online course offerings. In addition, workshops will be offered to students and faculty to help optimize the online experience.

Facilities Information

Juilliard’s Facilities Department has assessed and significantly improved building conditions in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the Diamond building we have improved ventilation/air quality, humidification, and building controls. In the Rose Building residence hall, we have repaired inoperable windows, added air purifiers, increased professional cleanings and disinfections, and created additional single sleeping spaces for residential students for regular and quarantine periods. Block 2 Building Use and Activity Guidelines

As with Block 1, permission will only be given to use the building for approved, Juilliard-related activities, and no guest access will be allowed throughout the fall semester. All building users will be asked to remain in the building only for the length of time required to complete their work, to use spaces only for their designated and approved use, and to strictly abide by the rules and designated time restrictions.

After careful planning and consultation with our medical consultants, we have concluded the general activities planned for Block 2 can move forward with appropriate safety precautions in place. While much of what we do will remain online (as previously announced), we will begin adding in-person activities including small ensemble work, individual vocal coachings, performance projects, and in-studio dance and drama classes. 

During Block 2, we will limit the overall building density to approximately 25% of its use under normal conditions. In addition, each room will follow either a maximum occupancy based on social distancing and ventilation guidelines, or a maximum number of participants, depending on the specific activity. In addition, each artistic activity will have a maximum length of use allowed, followed by a minimum “rest” period where the room will sit empty to allow any viral particles to settle, then disinfect the rooms. You can find a chart that provides this information here. Each department/division’s artistic and administrative leaders are hard at work planning exciting in-person performance work that will fall within these guidelines. 

The majority of seminars, practicums, and performance labs will remain fully online in Block 2. This is to reduce building density as well as maximize room availability for core performance activities. Please contact your faculty member or department if you are unsure about whether your class will be in person or online. 

For music students, lessons will function as they did in Block 1: if both the faculty member and student are comfortable doing so, in person lessons are possible, but space may limit how many lessons are allowed to be in-person. Please see the chart mentioned above for details on individual instruction, especially for singers. Starting in Block 2, in-person accompanists will be allowed assuming all participants are masked and proper social distancing is observed.  

Each department or division will reach out to students with more details about its in-person offerings for Block 2. Questions about performance projects should be directed to your department.

Block 2 Building Hours and Access

The Diamond Building will be open every day, including Sunday, 8am-10pm. The Diamond Building will be closed (including practice rooms) on Election Day, November 3, and Thanksgiving Day (November 26). Community members should only come to the Diamond Building if they have a confirmed room reservation or are scheduled to attend an in-person class, lesson, rehearsal, or other event. Only school-related activities are allowed to take place within the building.

Block 2 building access rules will start on Monday, October 26th. To get approved to enter the Diamond Building for Block 2, students must first provide the following:  

  • As stated in the “Baseline Testing” section above, ALL Block 2 participants will again be required to provide a negative COVID diagnostic test dated within 10 days of your first entry (or re-entry) to the Juilliard facilities, even if you have already done a baseline test for Block 1. Students must electronically send a scan or photo of their negative COVID-19 test result to Student Health Services ([email protected]) or upload it into Medicat (located in OKTA).
    • Residential students who are currently quarantining in the Residence Hall do not need to provide an additional baseline test, as they submitted a Block 2 baseline test prior to beginning quarantine.
  • Please read the Juilliard Community Pledge using this form and confirm you have read and agree to its policies. Please follow this step even if you agreed to the Community Pledge ahead of Block 1.

Once you have completed both of these steps you will receive an email from [email protected] confirming your approval to access to the building. Please note that it may take 1-2 business days to receive your approval email after submitting all of your requirements, and access cannot be granted until you have received your confirmation email from the Office of the Provost. We encourage you to submit these requirements as soon as possible so that we have time to process all requests. 

Anyone with a confirmed reservation or scheduled in-person class, lesson, or rehearsal in the Diamond Building will be required to complete a health questionnaire prior to entering the Diamond Building. This questionnaire verifies that the user is not currently experiencing any COVID-19-related symptoms. The questionnaire will be sent to you each day, and you must fill it out each day you are scheduled to attend in-person activities. Please be sure to fill out the questionnaire and have your QR code ready before entering the building to avoid congestion at the entrance.   

In addition, there will be a contactless temperature check and verification of face covering prior to entrance.   

Using Space in the Building in Block 2

We ask that only those who need to be in the building for approved performance-related work or practice room/studio access come to the building, and that you leave the building when that work is finished.

Never enter a room that you are not scheduled to be in, even if it is empty. An empty room may indicate the space is “resting” while the air recirculates after prior use. You must also leave the room promptly at the end of your reservation so the room has adequate time to rest and the air can recirculate prior to the next reservation.

Residence Hall students should always return to their room in the Rose Building to complete online work.

For nonresident students, if you do not have time to commute to an off-campus location to do your online work (in between other scheduled on-campus work), we have designated locations throughout the building where you can go.

Room Reservations

All room usage during Block 2, including teaching studio and practice room access, will be by advance reservation only. Music students may make space reservations between midnight and 4pm the day before the booking time through ASIMUT. Any reservations made after 4pm the day prior will not be accepted and you will not receive a QR code.

If you believe you should have received a QR code and it has not arrived by 9am on the day of entry, please contact [email protected]. These steps will also avoid congestion at the entrance. 

Request for classroom space (for students and faculty): If you would like to request a space larger than a practice room for chamber music rehearsals or other activities, please fill out the Classroom Request Form, which can also be found through ASIMUT. Please note due to the current guidelines, you may be required to move between two spaces based upon your booking request. Space may be reserved only for Juilliard activities.

Permission will only be given to use the building for approved, Juilliard-related activities, and no guest access will be allowed throughout the fall semester. All building users will be asked to remain in the building only for the length of time required to complete their work, to use spaces only for their designated and approved use, and to strictly abide by the rules and designated time restrictions.

Accommodations for space usage and adherence to other guidelines will be made for those with documented disabilities.

Once your reservation is made, it will appear in your personal agenda in ASIMUT.

The start times of all reservations will be staggered to minimize lines at the building entrance. In addition, each space (including practice rooms) will sit empty for a designated amount of time after each reservation block to allow the air to turn over.

You may only arrive at the building entrance 15 minutes prior to your reservation, and you must depart the building immediately following the conclusion of your activities.

Practice Rooms

Practice room usage is by reservation only. Practice Room Requests (for students) must be booked directly through ASIMUT by clicking on “Event signup.” Students are permitted to reserve up to 4 hours of practice room time per day, and a maximum of 28 hours per week. Instructions on how to reserve a practice space in ASIMUT.

No student may enter a room without a reservation—an empty room may be on room rest, and it may not be safe to enter.

A student must leave the room promptly at the end of the reservation. Staying beyond the end of your reservation time does not allow adequate time for the room to “rest” and the air to recirculate prior to the start of the next reservation.

Your school ID must be displayed in the practice room window at all times, with the name and photo facing out. Windows must not be covered or blocked.

Practice rooms are only available for individual work as most rooms do not allow for proper physical distancing. To work in groups of two or more, you must request a larger space from the Registrar’s Office by filling out the Classroom Request Form.

Students must wash/sanitize their hands before and after using a practice room. In addition, before and after each session, students must wipe down shared surfaces such as door handles, keyboards, and music stands using cleaning supplies provided by the school. Practice rooms will also be cleaned on a daily basis.

Specific practice room reservation protocols are in place for students who require rooms with specialized equipment/instruments (percussion, organ, harpsichord, etc.).

Dance Studios

The Dance Division is creating the class and studio schedule for Block 2 in accordance with the school’s health and safety policies. During scheduled technique class times, studios will be allotted to groups of eight or fewer dancers who are taking the same class. Some classes will remain remote, with instruction delivered via Zoom to dancers in their homes. We expect that studio availability for individual dancer sign-out will be extremely limited during the week and on Saturdays, due to the curricular activities of the school and the necessary resting times for rooms. On Sundays, dance studios will generally be available for dancer sign-out between 8am-10pm in one-hour increments. 

Drama Studios

The Drama Division will see that actors have permission to access the building for all official in-person work during Block 2. Actors may also request, through the division, a drama studio or practice room for individual work or to take part in a remote drama class/rehearsal. 

Dance and Drama students and faculty should contact their division for space reservations.

The Library

The Library continues to offer its curb-side pickup service, with materials available for pickup (Monday and Friday, 10 am to 4 pm). A robust collection of electronic resources is available on JUILCAT Plus.

The library reading rooms, stacks, reference room, and media center are closed, and access to physical materials is only available through curbside pick-up.

Recording Studio

The school’s recording studio is unavailable at the moment while we prepare for significantly increased livestreaming and recording capabilities later in Block 2 and beyond. In the meantime, you may reserve a classroom or other space in ASIMUT to self-record as long as you follow the room usage guidelines, including maximum rehearsal times and room-rest times. As guests are not allowed in the building, you may not bring in outside recording engineers.

IT Lab

The IT Lab on the second floor of the Diamond Building will be open in Block 2 for quiet study and printing during the hours that the building is open. Computer workstations stations are physically distanced, and there will be a limit on the number of students who can occupy this space at any one time. We please ask that you limit your time in the lab to two hours so that others may also access this resource. Please also wash your hands and wipe down any surfaces with the materials provided before and after use. 

Outdoor Spaces, Online Study, and Dedicated Eating Locations

Residence Hall students should always return to their rooms or head to one of our outdoor spaces to study or take an online class. However, we recognize that some nonresidential students will not always have time to commute home and will therefore need a place to take an online class, study, or eat in between scheduled in-person activities.

We have designated indoor and outdoor (weather permitting) spaces for these activities, and you can view a list of these locations here. You do not need a reservation in ASIMUT for these spaces—if you already have building access for that day, you’ll be able to simply walk in and use a space as needed.

Please note the following:

  • Quiet Study Areas: Masks are required in all Quiet Study locations. Headphones are also required—these spaces are not private or sound-isolated. If your class activity requires you to remove your face covering (an acting class, for example), you should book a private space through your department or a practice room through ASIMUT.

  • Eating Areas: Please be considerate of others and limit your stay in these eating areas to 15-20 minutes, and please wipe down the tables and chairs before and after you eat. Always remember to wash your hands before and after eating, and be sure to put on your mask as soon as you finish.

Lincoln Center has opened its outdoor spaces for socially distanced use. They have also set aside a designated area exclusively for Juilliard community members. Our space is a weather-protected balcony overlooking Amsterdam Avenue at the plaza level, right behind the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. It is reserved for Juilliard from 8 am to 6 pm, at least through Block 2, except in extreme weather. You can access this area by crossing the President’s Bridge and then walking toward Amsterdam Avenue on the plaza level. There are tables and chairs as well as access to Lincoln Center campus WiFi, so you can enjoy an outdoor break or take an online class. Please be advised that there is no power source in this location, so please be sure your devices are charged. 

Cafeteria

Operations of the dining hall and other on-campus food services will be in accordance with New York State guidance. In the dining hall, there will initially be no customer-facing serving stations. Juilliard’s food service provider is working to ensure students have appropriate dietary options with three grab-and-go hot boxed meals per day. When safe, the dining facility will have limited serving stations open for meal periods. We will reopen seating in the dining area when it is deemed safe, with tables and chairs positioned for socially distanced eating. Regular cleaning and disinfecting practices throughout the dining facility will be enhanced according to guidelines.

Block 3 Planning

As announced, students were able to request to remain fully online for Block 3. New York continues to have good success managing the virus, and we believe the health and safety guidelines we have in place, including routine testing starting in Block 2 will allow for safe and meaningful in-person experiences. That said, in consultation with our medical consultants, we currently expect the physical distancing and travel restrictions to remain in place for at least the next several months. Therefore, we are planning for in-person performance opportunities in Block 3 to look very similar to Block 2.

Even though certain spring academic courses will begin early, there will still be time in the schedule for performance-related work, however, we expect that work to remain in the form of small groups, and that there will be limited room and building capacity, and enforced room rest and mask requirements. For a reminder of what is currently allowed in Block 2, please see this chart. Of course, we will continue to refine and adjust these plans as we learn from our work together in Block 2 as well as in response to changing health conditions. Requests to complete Block 3 online

For Block 3, students who face difficulties getting to New York or who have health concerns about working in person were offered the opportunity to individually request to complete Block 3 fully online. For those students who chose this option, all Block 3 performance-based, technique, rehearsal, and small-group studio work will be done online. This will mean that Block 3 performance work will be replaced by virtual, individual, or written/research projects at the discretion of the student’s department.

The deadline to request to complete Block 3 online was Wednesday, November 11. However, if you have any questions please send them to [email protected]. Please note that students who choose to complete their Block 3 work fully online will not have access to the building.

An important note regarding the spring semester (starting on March 1): At this time, the expectation is that all students will be able to return for in-person work in the spring semester, although limitations will likely require us to use a hybrid model that mixes in-person and online experiences. We are closely monitoring progress on testing and treatment options, scientific studies on the performing arts, government guidance, and vaccine development to help us determine a plan for the spring semester.

Residence Hall

In the interest of the health and safety of all students, the residence hall will have reduced capacity this year, with only single-occupancy bedrooms. Students have now received information from the Office of Residence Life regarding their housing status, room assignments, housing contracts, move in information, and more.

Students who are assigned a space in the residence hall may begin moving in shortly before Block 2. A limited number of students will be granted permission based on need to move into the Residence Hall during Block 1. Residence Life has shared more details with those students directly.

Students who are assigned to a room in the Residence Hall and who choose to complete their Block 2 or Block 3 work completely online should contact [email protected] for more information on how this will impact their on-campus housing.

All Residence Hall questions should be directed to the Office of Residence Life. 

Off-Campus Housing

Students who will not be living in the residence hall can coordinate their move to NYC any time prior to Block 2 but should be mindful of screening and applicable testing and quarantine guidelines. The offices of Residence Life and Student Affairs have compiled a list of potential off-campus housing options for students and will be providing information on additional resources to students who will not be living in the Rose Building in the coming year.

Financial aid information for continuing students is available on WebAdvisor This information includes instructions for students who wish to appeal for additional aid based on a change in financial circumstances. As a reminder, the official start date for spring semester is March 1, 2021.   As previously announced, outstanding spring semester account balances will be due on February 1, and account statements will be available to view on WebAdvisor on January 2.  If you plan to sign up for the monthly payment plan, you can do so at www.afford.com. Credit balances will be mailed to your preferred addresses after March 1.  Please be sure to plan accordingly.  If you anticipate having difficulty funding your living expenses for January and February, please contact the Office of Financial Aid ([email protected]) as soon as possible to discuss your options.  Questions about billing, payment or refunds should be directed to [email protected].

FAQ

Do I have to take part in each block in the fall semester?
Yes, whether online or in-person, each block will contain work that is required in order to complete your fall term coursework, and in most cases, courses will be spread over more than one block. College students who anticipate any issues participating in parts of the semester should contact [email protected] or [email protected]. Preparatory Division students should contact [email protected] or [email protected].

At what point will I be expected to attend in-person classes?
Based on current assumptions, our goal is to have everyone on campus in time for Block 2, keeping in mind that screening and applicable testing and quarantine requirements may be in place at that time. However, assuming health conditions allow, the building will be open to students who need it as a resource during Block 1, with advanced approval from the Office of the Provost. We have built in an extended break between Blocks 1 and 2 to give College Division students time to move. New students and residence hall students should refer to information about orientation and residence hall move-in dates. As announced on August 6 for Block 2 and on October 23 for Block 3, students who face difficulties in getting to New York may individually request to complete Block 2 or 3 fully online. Please see FAQ “What if I can’t return to New York in time for Block 3?” for more details.”

What if I can’t return to New York in time for Block 3?
While New York City continues to make remarkable progress in its fight against the virus, we recognize that many other parts of the United States and the world have a long way to go. As such, we recognize that some of you remain uncertain about being in New York City for Block 3. This may be because of visa complications, travel restrictions, or virus-related health concerns in your own community or in New York City. Students who face these difficulties getting to New York for Block 3 had the opportunity to individually request to complete Block 3 fully online. For those students who choose this option, all Block 3 performance-based, technique, rehearsal, and small group studio work will be done online. This may mean that some Block 3 performance work is replaced by individual projects or written/research projects at the discretion of the department. Your individual department will be in touch with you with further details on how performance-based work will be completed in Block 3. Requests to complete Block 3 completely online were due by Wednesday, November 11.  Please note that students who chose to complete their Block 3 work fully online will not have access to the building. If you have any questions about completing Block 3 work online, or if you intend on joining Block 3 in person but need to request a late arrival to campus, College Division students should contact [email protected], and Preparatory Division students should contact [email protected] or [email protected] to request reasonable accommodations as soon as possible. As always, students needing accommodations due to disability should contact the Office of Academic Support and Disability Services.

I signed up to be fully online for Block 3. What does the new calendar for January-June mean for me? 
Your fall semester Block 3 work will still remain fully online, but you will also begin your spring semester academic courses (online) on January 11.  

My performance or practicum class started in Block 2 of the fall semester and is scheduled to continue in Block 3. How will that work?
Any fall semester classes that were scheduled for Block 2 and 3 in the fall will continue as planned. The spring counterpart to those courses will begin on March 1 and conclude on June 11. 

What is the plan for spring semester?
Certain spring academic courses will begin early on January 11 and will be delivered remotely. At this time, the expectation is that all students will be able to return for in-person work on March 1 (the official start of the spring semester), after the spring break week. Work after March 1 will continue to use a hybrid model, with classroom work done online, and as much performance work as possible done in-person. We are closely monitoring progress on testing and treatment options, scientific studies on the performing arts, government guidance, and vaccine development and will provide updated guidance for the rest of the spring semester after the new year. 

Which of my classes will be online, and for how long?
This will depend on evolving health conditions; however, we know that all classes will be online for Block 1 in the fall. With limited exceptions, we anticipate all academic courses to remain online for at least the full fall semester, and certain academic courses will continue to be delivered remotely in the spring semester. Some skills- and performance-based courses met in person starting in Block 2 in the fall, while Block 3 will focus on major study and performance work with certain spring academic courses taking place online.

Juilliard uses Zoom to facilitate virtual classes. Every Juilliard student has access via juilliard.okta.com. Faculty will provide the Zoom meeting invitation for each session. 

I have questions about taking or returning from a leave of absence, what should I do?
Please contact [email protected] to set up an advisement appointment to discuss further. 

Will I have access to the building during Blocks 2 and 3 for practice, studio use, library use, lessons, etc.?
The building is open on a limited basis, and by appointment, for limited class and studio work, as well as individual work in practice rooms, classrooms, and studios. Special arrangements will be made for access to library materials, including curbside pick-up. Building hours may be limited and room access is subject to availability. We encourage all those who can to work and practice from home or the residence hall so that the building remains accessible to those who need it.

How will performances work? Will there be audiences?
The goal is to begin in-person performance-based work in Block 2, likely with smaller ensembles/casts than normal, and then continue in Block 3 following the health guidelines that are in place at that time. Until public health and government authorities allow audiences in public concert halls and theaters, our performance work will be delivered online through virtual projects, livestreaming from studios and halls in the building, and recording projects.

How will contact tracing work?
If an individual tests positive, the school will work with the local health department to trace all contacts of the individual, in accordance with the protocols, training, and tools provided through the New York State Contact Tracing Program. Juilliard and New York State contact tracers will reach out to you if you have been named as a contact of a person who has tested positive, and they will provide you with detailed instructions on any testing and quarantine requirements. If you have not heard from Juilliard’s COVID Response Team, then you have not been named as a contact and do not need to take any additional actions related to any positive cases at Juilliard.

What happens if there is another wave of the virus?
The health and safety of the Juilliard community will always be our top priority. We have designed the block calendar plan to give us the maximum flexibility should health conditions change. We will alert the community immediately of changing health conditions and how they may impact our work together, and we are developing back up plans should the calendar need to be adjusted further. With guidance from the state health department, we are establishing methods to help detect early warning signs of a campus outbreak and working on protocols to contain such cases to the extent possible. We are preparing contingency plans for decreasing in-person activities or moving them online if necessary.

What about summer festivals that start in June, 2021?
While most festivals start after our academic year ends, which this year will be in June, we realize that some festivals start sooner. Students will be allowed to apply for a short-term professional leave, and if approved, attend festivals just as they would during a normal academic calendar.

I am an international student, what does this all mean for me?
At this time, the Office of International Advisement (OIA) is monitoring evolving guidance from SEVP regarding student visa procedures for the fall semester. OIA has hosted numerous town hall meetings through Zoom to discuss how this will impact international students in the fall semester, and will continue to communicate up to date information as it becomes available. Will my financial aid eligibility change as a result of the academic calendar changes?
Your financial aid offer contains an Estimated Cost of Attendance for both direct and indirect costs to assist you in budgeting for the academic year. The Estimated Cost of Attendance has been adjusted to account for the longer academic year. Students with increased indirect costs, such as off-campus rent or technology needs, may contact the Office of Financial Aid for a budget revision. This may increase your eligibility for additional aid such as Federal Parent or Graduate PLUS loans.

How will billing, payments and refunds work with the adjusted calendar?
An email was sent to your Juilliard email address on July 23, 2020. A copy of the email is posted as the Fall 2020 Tuition Letter on WebAdvisor, please read it carefully as it covers important changes to tuition payment schedules and options as well as health insurance news and a number of other changes for the Fall 2020 term. We are extending the usual payment deadline by two weeks, to August 24, 2020. Credit balance refund checks are expected to be issued in early September, as normal. Because students will not be on campus, the checks will be sent via regular mail; please plan your resources to allow for the extra time to receive your check, and be sure that your current mailing address is updated in WebAdvisor.

Will work-study be available?
Opportunities for employment will still be available although they will be more limited than usual since nonessential administrative employees will continue to work remotely.
