This all-French program, which is performed by more than 100 musicians, opens with a vibrant work by Lili Boulanger before exploring how Boulez took miniature solo pieces for piano composed early in his life and transformed them into expansive, richly colored orchestral works. The second half of the concert begins with Ravel’s delightful piano concerto, transitions to his Frontispice through the magic hand of Boulez’s orchestration, and culminates in Debussy’s brilliant symphonic sketches about the sea.
