(New York)—Juilliard announces full programming for its 2023-24 season, with more than 700 live music, dance, and drama performances at the school and at venues across New York City and beyond, including Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Hall, David Geffen Hall, Chelsea Factory, the Blue Note and Dizzy’s jazz clubs, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The coming season also offers livestreams of most performances and recitals as well as a new on-demand digital platform called Juilliard LIVE that provides access to a curated selection of Juilliard performances from the school’s archives and by current dance, drama, music, and preparatory students so that global audiences can experience the future of the performing arts from anywhere, anytime, all for free. For in-person audiences, tickets to all performances are low-cost or free, providing learning opportunities for students and audience access to the training process and performances by future leading artists.

The 2023-24 program highlights a cornerstone of the Juilliard experience, which celebrates interdisciplinary collaborations among students from different departments. The season also illustrates how Juilliard is shaping artists for today’s world through curriculum and performances rooted in the essential relationship between tradition and innovation. Juilliard balances fluency in many traditional art forms with innovative perspectives that challenge existing norms, conventions, and boundaries, propelling both its students and the field of performing arts into new, unexplored realms of creativity.

The upcoming season’s interdisciplinary performances exemplify this intersection of tradition and innovation. Particularly emphasizing the complementary synergies of these two fundamental pillars are programs conceived with Juilliard’s Creative Associates, special series and festivals such as The New Series and The Arts and Society Series, and collaborations between departments and with peer organizations. Bringing together students, guest artists, and artistic leaders from different disciplines through a range of conversations, performances, master classes, workshops, and more, the 2023-24 season centers on a creative process and practice that redefines artistic boundaries and is an essential part of the educational excellence that is the hallmark of Juilliard education.

“Juilliard embodies tradition fueling innovation,” Juilliard President Damian Woetzel said. “Building on the school’s rich history and daily work developing the next generation of artists, our 2023-24 season will share the future of music, dance, and drama through dynamic performances and groundbreaking new works and productions. The Juilliard String Quartet’s motto, “Play old music like it’s new and new music like it’s old,” underscores the artistic energy that drives the school and the arts forward with each new generation of era-defining artists.”

Tickets to all 2023-24 season events go on sale to the public on August 31. Member presales start on August 15. Student performances form a significant part of Juilliard’s performing arts curriculum, and prices are kept at a minimum. All tickets, with the exception of galas and fundraisers, are under $45, and many events are free. A calendar of events is included below, and all events can be viewed at juilliard.edu/calendar starting August 15.

Juilliard will continue to livestream select performances and student recitals for the public through its streaming initiative, Juilliard LIVE.

With the support of Bloomberg Philanthropies, this fall, Juilliard LIVE launches an expanded, free on-demand platform providing an additional curated selection of programs and content from Juilliard’s archives as well as current student productions. The service can be accessed through the online performance calendar at juilliard.edu as well as directly through a web browser. A Juilliard LIVE app will also be available to download on Apple iOS, Android, Apple TV, AndroidTV, Roku, and Amazon Fire TV.

Juilliard LIVE, which streams nearly 700 performances each year, was launched in 2021 under the leadership of President Damian Woetzel, dramatically expanding access for audiences around the world to Juilliard performances through livestreams and on-demand video.

SEASON OVERVIEW

Creative Enterprise
Creative Enterprise amplifies Juilliard’s unique multidisciplinary focus with a range of collaborative opportunities for students and audiences taking place throughout the school. Housed in the Office of the President, Creative Enterprise includes the Creative Associates program, the Arts and Society Series, partnerships with peer organizations, and more.

The Creative Associates program, a president’s initiative created in 2018 by Damian Woetzel and implemented by a committee of artistic leadership alongside the Office of the President, welcomes an expanding group of artists in residence—whose work exemplifies collaborative and interdisciplinary innovation—to the Juilliard community. Each Creative Associate spends time at Juilliard engaging collaboratively with the school’s community, as well as with their fellow Creative Associates through workshops, performances, coachings, public discussions, and other special projects. Juilliard Creative Associates who are featured during the 2023-24 season include Nicholas Britell, Raja Feather Kelly, Jennifer Koh, Nico Muhly, Caili Quan, Jamar Roberts, Joshua Roman, and Cécile McLorin Salvant. Violist Nadia Sirota has been appointed to the Juilliard faculty and will serve as Creative Associate at Large beginning this 2023-24 academic year.* In this role, Sirota will teach classes on campus, coach chamber music, and curate Creative Enterprise initiatives that engage everyone at Juilliard.

As a part of Creative Enterprise, Juilliard continues to partner with the downtown venue Chelsea Factory to present a weeklong residency of interdisciplinary programs that feature students from the music, dance, drama, and preparatory divisions in collaboration with Juilliard Creative Associates and additional guest artists. Included will be the New Series performance featuring Alvin Singleton’s Argoru I-IX with direction and choreography by Caili Quan, Thomas Flippin’s The Lost Village of Seneca, and multidisciplinary performances led by Nadia Sirota and Joshua Roman.

Lincoln Center Collaborations include Juilliard joining the yearlong, campus-wide celebration of composer Terence Blanchard. As part of New Dances: Edition 2024, Juilliard will present a new work choreographed by Hope Boykin set to music by Blanchard. Building on a recent visit to the school as part of the Film Scoring Lecture Series that is led by series executive creative director and composer Nicholas Britell (Pre-College ’99, piano; Creative Associate), Blanchard will also engage with Juilliard students through class visits and workshops during the fall.

The Arts and Society Series recognizes the essential role of the arts and artists in today’s world. This series explores citizen-artistry through a variety of lenses including history, health, education, justice, and diplomacy. These public programs range from conversations moderated by President Damian Woetzel to lectures with featured guests that are illuminated by artistic performances complementing each evening’s topic of focus.

The 2023-24 Arts and Society Series includes two historic tributes. Featured in the fall is A Centenary Celebration of Maria Callas, co-presented with the Consulate General of Greece in New York (September 21). Featured in the spring is Claiming Your Space: A Celebration of Black Music at Juilliard, a program that commemorates the 90th anniversary of a concert led by H. T. Burleigh that took place at Juilliard in 1934 featuring Black artists and works by Black composers (February 27). Additional programs will be announced throughout the year.

*Creative Associates list is current as of July 24, 2023.

Juilliard on Tour
Juilliard performances outside of New York City in 2023-24 include appearances nationally and internationally. On December 1, two dozen Juilliard Orchestra students join violinists Jennifer Koh (Creative Associate) and Jaime Laredo as part of a concert on the Kennedy Center’s Fortas Chamber Music Concerts series—of which Koh is the artistic director—in Washington, D.C. In March, Juilliard Jazz’s Duke Ellington Ensemble participates in a residency in Florida. International performances include an engagement in London with students from Historical Performance in collaboration with musicians from the Royal Academy of Music in October, and Juilliard415’s two-week U.K. tour in May.

Music
The Music Division includes orchestra, vocal arts, historical performance, jazz, chamber music, contemporary music, conducting, piano, and composition, and is led by David Serkin Ludwig, dean and director.

In 2023-24, renowned violinist Hilary Hahn serves as visiting artist in the Music Division. Over several visits throughout the academic year, she will work directly with students in public master classes, private group seminars, and workshops, culminating in a student performance project in April.

The Juilliard Orchestra performs a wide range of repertoire this season, including Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, Bruckner’s Symphony No. 8, Price’s Symphony No. 3, Stravinsky’s Petrushka, and Roberto Sierra's Fandangos. The orchestra welcomes several distinguished guest conductors for performances at Juilliard, David Geffen Hall, Carnegie Hall, and Alice Tully Hall. Making their debuts with the orchestra this season are Jörg Widmann (Advanced Certificate ’95, clarinet) (September 26) with a program that includes Mozart’s Symphony No. 41, “Jupiter,” and two of Widmann’s compositions including the U.S. premiere of his Violin Concerto No. 2 performed by Stella Chen (Diploma ’11, DMA ’21, violin); Ken-David Masur (October 23); Thomas Wilkins (November 20); Donald Runnicles (December 11); and Tito Muñoz (MAP ’98, violin) (January 27). David Robertson, the director of conducting studies and distinguished visiting faculty, conducts the annual Carnegie Hall performance on April 2, with an all-French program of works by Lili Boulanger, Boulez, Debussy, and Ravel. Other returning conductors include John Adams, who leads the performance at David Geffen Hall on April 29; JoAnn Falletta (MM ’83, DMA ’89, orchestral conducting) on February 12; Jeffrey Milarsky (BM ’88, MM ’90, percussion) on November 6; and Marin Alsop (Pre-College ’72, BM ’77, MM ’78, violin; honorary doctorate ’21), who conducts the annual commencement concert on May 23. Taking place this year at Alice Tully Hall, the commencement concert features Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra as well as a world premiere by Hilary Purrington (MM ’15, composition), the first of a series of commissions from Juilliard alumni composers.

The New Series—an innovative, interdisciplinary series conceived of and programmed by artistic director David Serkin Ludwig—is composed of five curated programs featuring top level performances of music of our time. The New Series debuted last season and continues in 2023-24 to bring today’s composers together with students from across Juilliard’s divisions. The series starts with Vox Celli, a cello choir program coached by Joshua Roman (Creative Associate) and developed in collaboration with the school’s Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts and Center for Innovation in the Arts (CIA). It features music by Gity Razaz (BM ’10, MM ’12, composition), Arvo Pärt, Villa-Lobos, and Eastman with an interactive projection design (October 3). The New Series continues with a composer spotlight program of chamber music by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich (DMA ’75, composition), the first woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize in composition (December 7); Alvin Singleton’s Argoru I-IX at Chelsea Factory (February 3), in which nine works for solo instruments will be paired with original choreography for Juilliard dancers in a program directed by Caili Quan (Creative Associate); an interdepartmental program with instrumental and vocal arts students performing Davies’ Eight Songs for a Mad King, Saariaho’s From the Grammar of Dreams, and Schoenberg’s Ode to Napoleon with a virtual projection set, narration, and multimedia production created by CIA as part of Carnegie Hall’s Fall of the Weimar Republic: Dancing on the Precipice festival (March 25); and the Juilliard Pride Songbook program celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community with new commissions by Juilliard alumni composers, in collaboration with the vocal arts and collaborative piano departments (May 9). Each New Series program features a preconcert discussion and will be livestreamed and filmed in HD for future digital release.

In addition to The New Series, Juilliard presents a wealth of contemporary music each season, including performances by the contemporary music ensemble AXIOM, under the leadership of Jeffrey Milarsky; the Percussion Ensemble, directed by Daniel Druckman; and numerous opportunities for student composers to have their works premiered or workshopped by student ensembles. The Center for Innovation and the Arts (CIA), under the direction of Edward Bilous, presents several contemporary music offerings in collaboration with other departments across the school including Future Stages, InterArts, and Art of the Score.

Juilliard’s wide-ranging chamber music presentations continue with more than one hundred student ensembles that perform throughout the year, both on campus and at other venues in the U.S. The 2023-24 season opens with the Mozart-a-thon (October 30-November 3), followed by the Haydn-a-thon (January 22, January 25-26) and Beethoven-a-thon (April 18), each performed by first-year undergraduate string quartets. ChamberFest, the annual three-day festival of chamber music spanning the centuries, takes place January 16-18, 2024. Additional chamber music offerings also include the Daniel Saidenberg Faculty Recital Series, the Wednesdays at One series in Alice Tully Hall, a Sunday chamber music recital series, and recitals and master classes by the Juilliard String Quartet, American Brass Quintet, Juilliard’s graduate resident string quartet—the Ivalas Quartet—faculty, and alumni.

Juilliard Opera offers three fully staged productions in the 2023-24 season, two of which are presented by the school for the first time. John Musto and Mark Campbell’s Later the Same Evening evokes New York in the 1950s and was inspired by Edward Hopper paintings. It was last seen in New York in 2008. This production, which takes place in November, is directed by Alison Moritz, with Joseph Colaneri conducting the Juilliard Orchestra. In February, in collaboration with Historical Performance, Juilliard Opera presents Francesco Cavalli’s Erismena, staged by Dutch-Peruvian director Lisenka Heijboer Castañón with Avi Stein conducting Juilliard415. Erismena, which was first performed in Venice in 1655 and is thought to have been the first opera to be translated into English, was staged in England only two decades after its premiere. This is the first time that the English translation will be sung in New York. In April, Director Stephen Wadsworth creates and directs a new production of Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito with the Juilliard Orchestra led by Nimrod David Pfeffer. The opera was last presented at Juilliard in 1971.

Singers from the Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts participate in the New York Festival of Song (NYFOS) at Juilliard, curated by Steven Blier, in January. Vocal Arts also presents Juilliard Songfest, curated by artistic director Brian Zeger, on March 28. The Liederabend series is presented with the collaborative piano department, led by Lydia Brown, throughout the season. And on October 13, mezzo-soprano Susan Graham leads her first master class at Juilliard.

Juilliard Historical Performance is a graduate-level, full tuition scholarship program for early music. Juilliard415—its period-instrument ensemble—partners across departments at Juilliard for a variety of presentations and opens its season in October with an all-Rameau program directed by Robert Mealy, its artistic director, as part of Music Before 1800, New York’s oldest early music series. Later the same month, Juilliard415 joins Yale Schola Cantorum for Handel’s L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato, conducted by Masaaki Suzuki. In the spring, Historical Performance musicians curate pop-up programs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art inspired by their experiences at the museum. In its New York performances at Alice Tully Hall, Juilliard415 introduces harpsichordist Francesco Corti, who directs a program with works by Corelli, Lully, and Muffat in November; welcomes the return of Kristian Bezuidenhout in a classical program of mostly Mozart in February; and it will be led by violinist Leila Schayegh, in her U.S. directing debut, in April.

Juilliard Jazz, under the direction of Wynton Marsalis and Aaron Flagg, features a curriculum focused on presenting music from across the jazz continuum, from its American roots to jazz vernaculars from other cultures and countries. The Juilliard Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Ensembles’ 2023-24 season presents music that encompasses the jazz legacy, spotlighting many different eras and genres from 1700 to the present day as well as women of color and individual composers.

The season starts with the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra performing The Big Train: Jazz in Motion by Wynton Marsalis, as well as music by Duke Ellington and Jimmy Forrest, and others who were inspired by the various rhythms heard through modes of transportation such as shuffle rhythms and train whistles, illustrating how trains were vital to the sharing and communicating of ideas and growing jazz movements. Later in the season, the Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Ensembles also pay tribute to Ornette Coleman, Mary Lou Williams, and Afro-Cuban Jazz greats Tito Puente and Chico O’Farrill with dedicated programs of their music, as well as a salute to Duke Ellington with an evening of his long-form pieces. Women of color in jazz are celebrated in a concert called The Music of Hazel Scott and Ginger Smock in the spring, and the orchestra and ensembles also offer evenings featuring the music of the WDR Big Band Köln; the BeBop Era Ballads, Blues, and Swing; and more at the Blue Note Jazz Club, Dizzy’s Club, and Juilliard.

Juilliard Dance
Juilliard Dance is led by Alicia Graf Mack, dean and director, and is acclaimed for building strong foundations in ballet, modern, and contemporary techniques in the classroom and in performance, working with faculty, guest teachers, and internationally renowned, boundary-pushing choreographers of the highest level. Through classroom work, performance opportunities, and interdisciplinary collaborations across the school and with peer organizations, students master both traditional techniques and contemporary styles preparing them for careers in today’s dance world.

A cornerstone of the division’s performance schedule, New Dances: Edition 2023, takes place December 6-10 and features four world premieres by New York-based choreographers working across a range of styles with live music played by Juilliard music students. New York City Ballet former principal dancer and Paul Taylor Dance Company resident choreographer Lauren Lovette will create a new piece for the first-year class; as part of Lincoln Center’s yearlong celebration of Terence Blanchard, the second-year class will debut a new piece by former Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater dancer, educator, and choreographer Hope Boykin; the third-year class will premiere a new work by feath3r theory choreographer and director and Creative Associate Raja Feather Kelly; and Omar Román De Jesús, artistic director of Boca Tuya, will create work for the fourth-year class.

Spring Dances takes place March 27-30, and features dancers from the classes of 2024-26. They will perform two major newer works—Kyle Abraham’s Studies on a Farewell and Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber’s Fugue in Crimson—as well as Shen Wei’s Map, an iconic work from 2005. Other events this season include the Choreographers and Composers concert, featuring student composer and choreographer teams (November 17 and 18), as well as Senior Dance Production, Choreographic Honors, and the Senior Graduation Concert in the spring.

Juilliard Drama
Juilliard Drama is led by Evan Yionoulis, the Richard Rodgers dean and director. The division annually presents seven fully staged productions in which third- and fourth-year students put their training with expert faculty into practice.

Fall productions include Shakespeare’s The Tempest (September 30-October 4) and King Lear (October 20-22) directed by Drew Wildman Foster and Luke Harlan, respectively, performed by the third-year class (Group 54). Fourth-year (Group 53) plays include Quiara Alegría Hudes’ Water by the Spoonful (November 17-20) directed by Aneesha Kudtarkar, Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest (December 14-17) directed by Janet Zarish, and Brecht’s Caucasian Chalk Circle (February 22-25) directed by Orlando Pabotoy.

Fourth-year actors are also featured in three short films written by Nathan Alan Davis, Emily Feldman, and Noah Haidle, all alums of Juilliard’s Lila Acheson Wallace American Playwrights Program. The short films provide graduating actors with practical on-camera experience working on film sets with professional directors and crews. The films will be screened at Lincoln Center with details announced at a later date.

Preparatory Division
Under the leadership of Weston Sprott, dean and director, the Preparatory Division comprises Juilliard’s Music Advancement Program (MAP), led by Anthony McGill, artistic director, and the Pre-College program.

Pre-College provides a conservatory-style curriculum to advanced young musicians from more than 10 countries, ages 8 to 18, who exhibit the potential, dedication, and ambition to pursue serious music study at the college level. MAP is a tuition-free program for intermediate and advanced music students from New York City’s five boroughs and the tristate area who demonstrate a commitment to artistic excellence. MAP actively seeks to include students from diverse backgrounds historically underrepresented in the classical music field.

Among the division’s many performance highlights and collaborative opportunities is the two-year Composing Inclusion commissioning program, powered by the Sphinx Venture Fund. In its second year, this partnership between the Preparatory Division, the New York Philharmonic and the American Composers Forum brings together different musical levels, perspectives, ages, and communities for the creation and performance of new music. On April 20, the second orchestral Composing Inclusion event takes place at David Geffen Hall with the Pre-College Orchestra performing alongside musicians from the New York Philharmonic as part of a NY Phil Young People’s Concert. With conductor and co-host Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser, the ensembles will premiere two commissioned works by Nicolás Lell Benavides and Andrés Soto. Composing Inclusion works for brass, wind, and percussion ensembles by Jasmine Barnes, Elijah J. Thomas, and Lauren McCall, respectively, will also receive their premieres during the 2023-24 season by students from the Preparatory Division and NY Phil musicians.

Additional events next season feature the Pre-College String Orchestra conducted by Nico Olarte-Hayes, and the Pre-College Symphony and Pre-College Orchestra conducted by its music director, Adam Glaser, and guest conductors Earl Lee and Kalena Bovell. Additional highlights include Pre-College Percussion Ensemble, Youth and High School Choruses, and Opera Scenes concerts.

MAP students perform in several instrumental and choral ensemble performances. In December, the MAP String Ensemble ventures beyond Juilliard and joins the Boys of the Saint Thomas Choir for Christmas on Fifth Avenue at Saint Thomas Church. In the spring, the MAP Wind Ensemble, String Ensemble, and Orchestra make their debut in Alice Tully Hall in the world premiere of a commissioned work by 2023-24 MAP composer in residence Marcus Norris.

Preparatory Division student chamber music and solo recitals occur frequently throughout the year, and there is a faculty recital series in the fall. These events are open to the public and available to watch via livestream through the performance calendar on the Juilliard website.
